Hi there i'm new to the site and looking for some help.

I have just recently bought a 96 Previa 2.4 GL i have noticed a slight knocking noise coming from drivers side rear i checked the spare wheel and this was fine and tried rocking the car and listening but i cant hear nothing.

I have also noticed a petrol smell and wondered if anyone would know what this could be i have checked under the car and i have not notied any visable signs of a leak.

One last thing (for now) When i bought the car i did not notice it had an advisory which said it had an oil leak on the rear diff is this an expensive problem to have repaired.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Most probably the knocking is coming from your rear suspension dampers (incorrectly called shock absorbers). Replace them as a pair..

The diff leak is most probably from the output shaft seals. There is one on either side. Here I am assuming you have the independant suspension model. Let me just say getting the diff filler plug off is a right swine.

Finally the smell of fuel could be coming from your injectors. injector pressure return pipe, cold start injector, throttle body, the filler cap or even the neck of the filler tube, take your pick.

I can't help Alex other than to say that my Previa always smells strongly of petrol when we fill it up. My local garage was unable to find the problem, so now we only ever fill it to about three-quarters full and don't get the smell.

Older Previa's suffer from the neck of the filler tube rusting. That is the pipe that goes from the fuel entry point to the tank. It can easily be replaced by a bot of UPVC piping and rubber clamps from B&Q. Smells when filling up to the brim is normally down to this.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look. Is there anywhere online that I can download a service manual for these cars? I've spent ages searching but can't find one.

Autozone used to have a free online one but due to abuse from people that did not respect the copyrights and were including content from it in CD's sold on eBay it is noo longer free.

The online one was however simply the same content found within the Chilton Previa manual which you can buy off eBay or Amazon and I would really recommend you buy one. Having the book is far more useful than faffing around with PDF's or print outs. I happen to have the genuine Toyota factory manual for these cars but they are very hard to come by and to be honest the Chilton is better for the amateur. To use the factory manual you need to be a mechanic or at least have a good understanding of cars.
