T180 Run Flats To Non Run Flats

Hi everyone

First post so Hello to all

Going to edge in here with the age old topic of T180 run flats, my dilema as most T180 owners its time to change tyres (2 front) at the cost of £230 a tyre from Toyota in Flakirk i will not mention what Perth are charging, so with out sounding to scottish and tight with my money but rip off *****.

I'am thinking of changing to 4 x 19" TSW alloys with standard tyres at the cost of £900 fitted, yes i will not have run flat tyres and yes i will have the amber light on the dash saying my tyres are flat(or until i can get it taken out), but what i will have is a car that if it has a puncture can go to most if not all tyre garages and buy a replacement tyre for less than £100 and i will use tyre weld to see me till i get to a garage (or have a spare old T180 wheel and tyre in the boot undecided on the spare in boot).

Hopefully this will give a good solution to a T180 problem thats has bugged the life out of me since finding out about this after getting a T180 and the wheels look damm good.

Cheers

p.s. not buying from that the company listed but could only find the image from them

Sounds ok.

Just make sure you fit a tyre size that is commonly available and that you have a choice of makes. I did when I moved to 18" wheels. The RAV 4.1 model will take 20" wheels as well. I've not really looked at 19" wheels so make sure they're available and tyres are ok to get. And not being cheeky cos you obviously know what your doing, but I've found that alloy wheels are a fashion item and get changed regularly.... so that if you need a spare wheel due to damaging one, they do eventually go obsolete.

I went for the DARE wheel as I wanted a lightweight wheel and I have stretched Fawlcen tyres around them. The MAK mirror wheel I also have are much heavier - so increasing unsprung weight and meaning more weight to shift.

Hi Kingdom, is your car now out of warranty?

If not, then your plan will invalidate it! The Lexus RX400h SE-L uses the same size tyres as the T/SR180, so you could remove the inner support ring and still keep your TPWS working

The tyres still aren't that cheap (about £150 per tyre) but it could work out cheaper in the long run :)

Thanks for the replies,

The car is still under warranty till Dec, but how will it invalidate the warranty if my local toyota garage can not supply me with tyres and turn me away after highlighting after my service that i need tyres(Toyota Dunfermline). Would this not only invalidate warranty issues associated with the wheels and not the whole car ?

cheers

Yes only things that are affected by the wheels but bear in mind that if you have any suspension, brakes or steering problems they may well dig in. The rolling radius needs to be similar or it may affect the speedo.

Warranty restrictions are not allowed.

mind you can get away with 10% difference - especially if the speedo is running 10% fast.....like wot mine does on number 1.

Well i think i will be going for the new wheels.

The outer radius will be the same but the alloy wheel size will increase while decreasing the wall size of the tyre, so hopefully this will make the alloy look bigger and the wheels look bigger. Was going to look at 20" but the Garage said i might need spacers for the wheels.

Does anybody know if there is a way of turning the tyre pressure monitor system off, or will this not work anyway if i have no tyre pressure monitors on ?

So hopefully next week i will have my new wheels and tyres and be able to go for a long drive or short drive without having to worry about, what if i have a pucture what will i do, next topic will be alloy wheels for sale with runflat tyres 2 x good tyres 2 x worn. I will post images of the wheels when fitted to T180

cheers

There may be an obvious answer to this, but I will ask anyway. Could you not retain use of the TPMS if you transferred the valve set ups to your new wheel? This would then save the light being on and you would still have the warning system in place?

Yes. I spoke to the garage about this but theTPMS is not the most solidy built item in the world and can be broken very easily even when changing tyres never mind changing wheels, when i mentioned that i was not fussed for TPMS he was seemed happy to leave them off and said it would prevent any more cost assoiciated with changing the wheels.

Don't get me wrong i would prefer to keep them but not when it could add more cost onto the cost of changing, the garage did say that if the threads on the TPMS are not damaged and are going to fit on without major headaches then they will do it, if not then bye bye TPMS.

Kingdom,

Just check that the proposed new tyres are speed rated as per your old ones - I had a friend with a BMW, due to go the autobahn, had just changed his tyres for cheaper ones and I found they were only about 100 mph rated instead of the 130/140 mph he had should had, he did not know about speed rating - the dealer did change them for the right ones after some trouble but it cost him!!

Your current ones should be good for the top speed T180 rated as 120mph but you will not get much chance to do that BUT they will also be load rated - do be careful.

Hi Kingdom

The H is the speed rating which in this case is up to 130mph and the 99 is the load rating which is 775kg/tyre. So we are within bounds.

Tyres and Wheels on and they run good feel good and look good.

The tyre pressure monitor warning light came on flashing after 60 miles of driving(fast at picking up that the TPMS is not working) but i will hopefully get this sorted out.

Looking good Kingdom.....I'm sure many more T/SR 180 will be getting rid of the RFT on theirs....

Nice work. The TPMS control unit is behind the driver side knee panel. Try unplugging it.

Be sure to let the residual voltage drain before messing with the knee air bag

Did you manage to disable the TPMS warning?
