T180 Engines

Having recently bought a 2006 T180 2.2 and having been a forum member for some years, clearly, there are alot of T180 owners with problems centering around blocked EGR valves.

How do you keep them clean ?

If there are any Toyota or non-toyota technicians on the forum that have actually stripped one of these engines down, I would really appreciate your input.

Personally, I use a diesel additive (Miller Sport 4) since I purchased the car in the hope that the fuel will burn maybe cleaner rather than using the expensive diesel. I do this because I mainly use the ar for town driving, economically returning on average 37Mpg(av speed circa 20mph !). But, I also use the car for long motorway runs twice/month (180 mile round trip).

Your comments would be appreciated.

I don't think there is any way to keep them clean other than taking them off and cleaning them yourself every now and again. This will keep the carbon/soot build-up down and hopefully prevent a failure.

Because of the nature of the beast, (exhaust gas recirculator) exhaust gas recirculates through the valve into the inlet manifold, as exhaust gases are sooty the valve gets sooted up inside.

Try to keep throttle useage light (produce less carbon) and keep the air filter in good order. Your additive may help if it reduces exhaust soot.

Maybe someone knows something other than this that may be of help.

To tubaman,

As Q.S. points out, it is the nature of the beast. No matter how refined modern engines become with modern oils & special fuels to help, you will never defeat carbon. I stripped head of my D4D last summer during summer break (pig of a job) & gave every component a complete strip & clean. Ground valves, the complete works. Am afraid what with modern long life servicing, to do a complete de-coke is pretty much a thing of the past. It takes longer to remove all components to access head for removal than it would just to pull head of an older engine from the 80's or 90's. As to EGR valve cleaning, it is a common problem straight across the board with all manufacturers, not just the T180. If you can give your car a series good run every now & again getting some series heat into the cat it will not do your engine any harm just watch out for the boy's in blue.

Regards, Beagh.

Make sure your car has the latest ecu software for starters. I always say a good blast up the road every now and again helps as does good fuel quality.

My T180 has been back to Mr T twice for a blocked valve. Only symptom was rough starting, some times cutting out unless I gave it a bit of Gas. After a few seconds the engine ran as normal. First time they said they had updated the ECU but it quickly became clogged again.

Can someone please post a quick DIY guide to the removal and cleaning of this part? Would like to make sure I keep it clean as I have a nasty feeling it's not helping the MPG.

hello

the EGR valve to be cleanned periodically because it is responsible for CO content in exhaust gases.

the above presumes - the bad ignition process the early fault of this EGR valve. so in order to reduce unexpected faults of the EGR all injection system as well as T/C performance must be in order with scheduled testing/maintenance. cheers/Igor

I have the exact same problem as you about the starting when pressing the gas. So could this problem be down to the EGR valve be clogged? My question is how do you get to clean the valve?

Remove the plastic engine cover,

EGR valve is located at the front top of the engine as you look at it, with a metal pipe coming off the top and goes to the right and bend in towards the cylinder head.

Remove the metal pipe (2 x 12mm nuts & 2 x 12mm bolts) Making sure not to drop/lose the 2 gaskets.

Then loosen the metal bracket that runs left/right on the front of the inlet manifold (no need to remove)

Undo the 2 12mm bolts holding the EGR valve to the inlet manifold

Unplug the connector on the EGR valve and remove.

Mart.
