My carina E 1997 1.8CD hatch. Have what has become fairly loud "rattling noise, it has been suggested by mechanic

that it is transmission (you don't get the noise when not in gear), probably the Lay(??) shaft bearings. Further suggested that the gear box is removed and sent to be fixed at local gear box specialists. So far so good (although means breaking open piggy bank). However its has been suggested that if these bearings are badly worn then this has a knock-on effect on their seating in the gear bos in that the movement (which I hear as rattling) will wear the seating and if the box is alloy then the whole box requires replacing. (whoops thought I or worse!) . OK What I really want someones advise on is, is this latter idea regarding the wear right? so if I buy a secondhand Carina box is there anyway to test if its OK before fitting? (dont really weant to pay for replacement only to find its no good and have to pay yet again to have it removed if you understand me. I know get rid of car but not financially practical my pension does not match Fred the Sheds!! Please anyone any ideas  :( :( :( davek

if it has been confirmed that the box is faulty,

then replace gearbox.
