WARNING, A mate of mine got done by the 'boys in blue' last week for towing a trailer with two number plates displayed. He had just attached his own plate above the existing number which had just been written over where the plate should have been put. The traffic cop said they were having a perge on trailers so beware when in Merseyside.

I think theres a general check on number plates and their styles. You just need to check some of the cruising sites to see whats happening.

Another easy way of collecting some tax.

one guy got fined £30 cos his front number plate wasn't fixed on the front - easy money.

I would argue that. As far as I know there isn't actualy a requirement to have the plate fixed. It just has to be clearly visble; otherwise anyone using a trade plate would be open to being done.

Just to save arguments!

Section 42(1) Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 states offfence if registration mark is not fixed on vehicle.

Level 3 fine (max £1000) or a £30 fixed penalty notice.

Time to issue ticket and check documents 1/2 hr

Time to process ticket, log, and record it 1/2hr or so.

Time to process payment 1/4 hr

Total time cost to do ticket 1 1/4hr

Probably costs more to issue ticket than the £30!

Anymore qustions on number plates (probably regret this one).

I suspected this might be the case but couldn't find any data. I think it helps to protect cars from identity issues.

If I read the OP correctly the correct number plate was showing but there was a second one displayed as well.

If this is the case I go back to my point that it's an easy way to collect some tax.

Half hour to issue ticket and check documents seems a long time. Half hour to process, log and record it seems even longer.

Could all be to do with confusing the Number Plate Recognition systems that are getting more common for checking MOT/road tax/insurance?

I have been banging on about number plates on here for some time. I had a visit from DVLA last year to say the Police and DVLA were cracking down on all aspects of plates. The offence I would suspect, would be buried in the construction and use regs, two different mumber plates on a car is asking for trouble, no matter how innocent. The plate could slip and show part of another underneath and confuse the ANPR cameras. Just like all other motoring matters, it is an easy tax collection, but if you follow the rules, you wont get fined. Trade plates are a completely seperate matter, you MUST display those properly as well (no good hiding one on the dash-although we have all done it!)

Kingo

When I was a mere lad and used to drive tractors and trailers for grass collection for the local farmer, his trailers all had 2 sometimes 3 number plates so that you could drive any tractor with any trailer. As they were all registered to him it didn't matter. Suppose this is illegal now.

Strange how petty motoring offences have suddenly become important (and finable) when shoplifters get away with a warning.

My experience of farmers, and I come from a family of them, is that they take a fairly relaxed view of the rules. As evidence can I quote the farmer passing through Ripon market place at about 06.30hrs one August morning pulling three trailers behind his tractor - all in line astern! I must have waited at the junction for about 30 seconds completey dumbstruck and not another vehicle in sight!

If it had been Anchorman, he could of course have pleaded that he forgot that he wasn't at work ;) - but it's a bit difficult to think of mitigating circumstances for the farmer. I'm certain that there would have been no braking on at least the last two trailers.

Re the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) computer.

This is a video device that reads everything it sees as registration numbers. ie if it sees a brick wall it tries to read it and usually comes up with 1's and H's and can't pick it up as a registration number sp gives up.

When it does read a registration number it makes a noise to draw attention if the number refers to a stolen vehicle, no insurance, Vehicle excise licence, no known keeper or if notified off road. It does other stuff as well but basically that's what it does.

If you obscure the number, have itallics, screws in convenient places or basically adjust the plate to say your name then it can confuse the machine.

Because ' all cars lok the same these days' and I have to admit that a Huyndai 4 x 4 in silver looks very much like the Rav4 and a new Mitsubishi is a Rav4 knock off I tend to agree. It is therfore important to be able to tell vehicles apart and the registration number is the only way. In effect it is a serial number to identify something.

Hope this helps.

Come over to Ireland - you don't often see a trailer with even one registration plate, let alone two or three!! And there's still plenty of examples of italic, gothic, you-name-it fonts :D
