1st Year Warranty Work - Front Pads

Just have my first year service and the stealer has recommended the front discs to be skimmed under the warranty

My questions:

Has anyone else had this done so early?

Should they change the disc pads if they skim the discs?

Discs should last at least 30,000 miles without replacement or skimming. You should ask them why they require skimming, are they scored? If they skim the discs then you will need new pads.

They are skimming the discs due to corrosion, I'd asked that if they needed skimming at 8000miles they should replace the discs as skimming them reduces the life span. They said that they would only replace the discs if they were futher issues with the discs.

I don't understand why you would replace discs due to corrosion. All brake discs have surface corrosion which is removed by the brake pads during braking. You do not need to skim for this, unless there is deepre corrosion which is causing pitting of the disc surface. If this is the case, I would question the quality of the discs and ask for replacement ones.

I bought a BMW bike which had badly pitted discs at 9000 miles

due to being parked up for a long period of time with water between the disc and pads.

It had caused a localised "swelling" of the discs.

I replaced the discs. (£380.00 inc. pads).

If your dealer is going to all the trouble of removing the brake discs to send them off

for skimming, I'm suprised.

Lets say skimming costs them about £20.00 if they know somebody local......

There is somebody selling genuine toyota discs on eBay for £82.00 delivered (presumably still making a profit).

Surely, if the car is under warranty, £60.00 is a great good will gesture?

If they won't play ball, I'd pay the difference and have a pair of new.

The skimming will be carried out under the warranty, however I don't want the disks skimming but rather for them to be replaced. I've only replaced discs on a car after about 45,000 miles and have never needed my discs skimming on any other car I've owned, skimming discs only gets you closer to the minimum thickness that gives you ££££ signs on your bill for replacement discs + pads.

They must be manufactured from poor grade steel

By the sounds of it though they should replace the pads after skimming the discs as using the old pads in my book is wrong
