Avensis Brakes

Hi all,

I have just fitted new EBC pads to the front and rear of my 2003 T-Spirit. Unfortunately I am now suffering from the dreaded brake squeal that seems to afflict this particular model. I have fitted the anti-squeal shims, however they have not helped at all.

I noticed on the original pads there is a thick white substance that had been applied to the backs. I do recall reading a post in which someone did mention that this was a type of grease that Toyota were using along with the shims. Does anybody here know what that grease is called and is it available from Toyota or anywhere else for that matter?

Regards,

Al

To al10000,

It is a form of copper slip, only different brand name & texture. Your local motor factor should be able to supply you with required grease.

Regards, Beagh.

did mine 2 months ago with new disks , i used the copper ease grease and the job was apiece of p--s to do .Toyota quoted me 250 quid for front pads and disc only.I did it myself for 115 quid front pads and disk with rear pads took about 1 hour and getting no squeak at all.Stuff the Toyota main dealers the money skanking b-----ds.

Thanks for the reply Beagh.

Having clocked up about 20 miles this morning I noticed that the squeal seems to be a lot less pronounced so hopefully it might just be a case of the pads bedding in.

With regards to the grease you mentioned could it be Lithium grease?

Thanks for the reply pasherp,

I originally fitted the pads with copper ease but as i wasn't aware of the issues with brake squeal I didn't fit the shims. It was only when the squeal manifested itself I found out about the anti squeal shims which I then purchased. I fitted the pads dry (no copper ease) with the shims, because I wanted to find out what the grease toyota used was (this stuff was on the back of the old pads). The squeal was still apparent last night before I posted, but after clocking up a few miles this morning it appears to be quietening down a bit.

I agree with you with regards to main dealer prices, but I guess thats how they make their money.

As you say it's a simple job that any competent person can do and save themselves a wad of cash.

Regards, Al

To al10000,

As you point out your pads will require some time to bed in, unless you have renewed discs. Old discs will have a wear lip on outer edge, noise from pads should become less pronounced as outer edge of pads wear off against lip on old discs.

Hi Beagh,

Well the squeal is now barely audible (people are no longer staring as I brake!) so hopefully it will resolve itself fully of it's own accord. Still like to know what that grease is called though!

Hi All,

I have the T-Spirit (53 plate) and since I bought it from a Toyota dealership it has squealed badly under breaking (unless its heavy). Toyota have done very little to sort this and its doing my nut in.... any advice do I need to buy all new brake pads and shoes and then grease them or what?

The grease you're referring to is available from any Toyota dealer, I've used this grease myself and I find it superior to the average copper slip, it's much thicker and has greater adhesive characteristic, so in my experince it lasts longer and keeps the brakes quiet, as for the name it varies somewhat (shim grease, caliper grease, disc brake grease), just ask for this part number: 08887-80609 and you'll get a tube of this grease, however it's a tad pricey but well worth it in my opinion.

One thing I might mention since we are on the subject of brake greases, you know the pink grease that Toyota supplies with it's brake calipers rebuild kits to use on caliper boots, piston, sliding pins, etc (Toyota calls this Lithium soap base glycol grease their repair manuals) you can get that also in a tube, part number: 08887-01206 and that one is surprisingly cheap.

Hi Hawke 56,

Thanks for the info. The price is not important I just want silent brakes! I'll give it ago and post the results.

Regards, Al
