hi paseo

ive done the same on my yaris

its still running the std alternator which will cope for the meantime although i do plan to uprate it in the near future to a higher output item. ie one of a big exec car. the std one will cope it is just under a bit of pressure to keep the two topped up, especially the one for the car to be sure charge is there for when ya crack it up next time!

what sort of split charging system are ya going to be using?

hi paseo!

thanks for the words!

as for splitcharging theres a couple of ways it can be done.

two require identical batterys and one can get away with using two different ones

first of all you could fit the 2nd Battery in the boot for example and run a feed from the primary Battery to the +ve of the 2nd batter and then ground the -ve to the bodywork, the ice can then run off the 2nd Battery and as long as it is exactly the same as the original with the same capacity it should charge fine with no problems

but........

it will always be connected into the circuit and can still cause the main battery to go flat which isnt good if ya pumping the tunes with the engine off

the solution is to use a split charging relay which disconnects the batterys from one another when the engine is off and allows the ice to thump while the 1st battery remains isolated and ready to crank the engine even if ya kill the 2nd battery. as soon as the engine is started the relay then connects the 2nd battery back into the system and gets recharged

they relays are available from autoleads and are about 20 quid - this is what i use

alternatively phoenix gold do a special intelligent unit that can charge different batterys at the same time and isolates them when need be but its about 300 quid to buy!

THANKS FOR THE INFO MAN..!!!!!!!!! IT'S BETTER I BUY THE RELAY FROM AUTOLEAD CAUSE PHOENIX GOLD ITS A BIT EXPENSIVE.

I don't suggest a second Battery, each Battery requires 10 amps to charge. If you had 10 batteries you'd need 100 amps from the alternator constantly. Capacitors are far better suited for use on a street car along with an upgraded alternator and wiring.

Yep, Dirt is right! Get a cap, one of them grounding or "hot earth" kits, and upgrade your amp and all underhood primary wires as well as the fuel pump power and ground. All that will work wonders. Also get a HID kit or upgrade your light harness wires to help prevent burned wires from xenon lights or headlight dimming from bass.

capacitors dont always help with big installs as ive found out personally while the secondary Battery has done wonders for the install. they help with the power delivery to the bass amps but dont help cut the dimming off the lights etc.

also a capacitor cannot prevent the Battery from being completely flattened!

as said a bigger alternator is the way forward and this is one of my next prioritys

Yeah, but who sells a bigger alt for our cars?

You can source something from salvage yards that will fit with little modification. Is the alternator on the backside of the engine for yours also?

this is a USDM 98 paseo alternator

this tundra part looks very close...

here's a viper's, looks good also..

and this is a 90amp from a 93 MR2

Alternators are available, even though not 'made for' our cars they aren't hard to modify.

As long as the mounts are roughly in the same place, there is room and our able to get enough purchase to create tension on the drive belt then it should be reletively simple to do so
