Making Like A Tractor

Hi Guys,

The morning after doing a 150 mile run mainly on motorways the RAV produced a constant engine noise akin to an old clapped out tractor.

It continued for the short 4 mile trip and when started again it was back to it's normal sweet tone.

Does anyone know why this might have happened?

Crissy.

2004 Rav 4

2lt. 5 door manual diesel.

Welcome to the club

It is almost impossible to be sure what that could have been without the chance to hear it or further syptoms. Just lift the bonnet and have a look around . It might be worth checking the oil as some sticking valves can cause excessive oil consumption.

Did the noise follow the revs of the engine?

Was there any smoke?

Did it lose power?

Did any warning lights come on?

Cheers

Is it possible to do a recording of the noise place a link to it?

I did that and got lots of help from AM and the crew.

Hi Chrissy

I guess from your post that you also run a clapped out tractor, otherwise you wouldn't know what one sounds like

Are you sure you weren't driving along the motorway in the tractor and just having a 'senior moment' ? Or did you climb into the tractor the next day without realising?

Basics of course to check are the oils and the water coolant.

After the 150 mile trip the day before, you may have picked up something in the engine compartment that brushed against a moving part - which eventually dislodged after the 4 miles - if the car is running ok, and the basics are ok, then dismiss it as a one off. If it happens again of course then it will need a check.
