My current car, an old Renault 5 is on its way to knackers yard and the only car I would consider replacing it with, is an Aygo - I just want 4 wheels that go, and an Aygo seems to fit the bill. However, do I buy a used one or a 06 model. This will be my 'forever car' ie: I expect it to last at least 12 years. Having driven old cars for all my life, I am somewhat baffled by airbags, a/c, iPod plug in, alloy wheels (I have those on the Renault, apparently) and all the other c**p that Curries et al try to sell me. I just want to know about the good, bad and ugly of an Aygo

Any and all feedback would be much appreciated

Thank you

A Renault 5  That must be at least 20 years old. A 06 model is obviously 3 years old by now and I am sure compared to your current car you will enjoy it. Look after it and I can’t see a reason why it can’t last for as long as your 5

The Aygo fits the bill as a "forever car". Cheap & reliable.

If you're going to keep it that long I suggest getting the diesel version. Its torquey diesel engine is a proper little workhorse and requires less long term maintenance costs (engine oil every 20,000miles & the timing belt even has a 150,000mile service interval). Also, the diesels less revvy engine is kinder to the piston rings and can potentially last a lot longer. The petrol version is quieter, 30kg lighter, has a nice engine note, but struggles a bit up inclines at motorway speeds

Real life mpg is about 45-55mpg for petrol, 60-70mpg for diesel (remember diesel is usually a bit more expensive)

12 year corrosion warranty is good. The rust proofing is excellent on the Aygo.

It really is a modern day renault 5 / 2CV and is what the Smart fourfour should have turned out like (instead of borrowing the mitsubishi colt platform)

If you buy used you will have a car that has already had any warranty work carried out (some people had leaky door seals, but several service bulletins sorted it)

Aygo shared the platform with Citroen C1 and Pug 107, who sell the same parts for less than Toyota

Dont buy the Aygo because its a Toyota which is said to be a reliable car manufacturer. its exactly the same as the citroen c1 and peugeut 107. If you want a real toyota id go for the yaris.

But dont get me wrong, I love my Aygo :)

They are called triplets. They are reliable, and they will be reliable. Get the one you like "design" wise. :)

Don't get me wrong, I also love my two Aygo-s :D

Considering that the Aygo holds its price so well you might want to look at the price of a new one compared to a 2nd hand.

Around £6k for a 2006, or a new Blue for around £8k and you'll know all the history of it (less suprises).

I'd go for a new one too.

You'll get exactly what you want and just as Gordon said: you'll know ALL of its history.

Only downside is that it can take quite some time befor you can take

delivery, where a "pre owned" vehicle can be delivered allmost instantly...

I did exactly that and after looking at 2nd hand cars, I thought for the little extra I might as well have a new one. The Aygo holds its value very well.

I was lucky and took delivery of mine after just a couple of weeks, but there is apparently a 12 week waiting list on some models now!!!

If you are keeping it 12 years resale values don't come into it!

Ours took 4 weeks to be delivered, drivethedeal have some excellent deals on new ones.

The water pump has gone on ours after just over 2 years and only 8,500 miles - we are not alone, but looking at the paperwork the part is £60.

I expect it to be cheap enough to fix in the long term - we bought ours as a long term keeper. Once it's paid for fixed costs will be about £300 a year (tax, insurance, service).

I had a Yaris 1.3 as a courtesy car yesterday - at 70mph (3,500 revs) it didn't sound as pleasant as the 3 pot motor in the Aygo. It wasn't as nippy or frugal either. Aygo does about 45mpg round town, the Yaris was showing an average of 36mpg for the trips I did in it - about 50 miles of mostly urban work.
