Gearbox Change

Hi all

My gearbox is finally deceased on my 1995 3dr. I have located a recon one, but have been told the engine needs to come out to replace it.

According to toyota this is a 14hr job and at thier prices + price of gearbox not worth doing on a car that old.

Is it true the whole engine needs to come out ?

Any advice please

Bothwel is the regular 4.1 model expert.. having put in a turbo nutter engine that would shame many a Bavarian saloon car.... into two 4.1 RAV's.... :o :o :o

He looks in when ever the whisky needs changing on his intravenous drip :P :P :P.....

I've done a few clutches on them and never had to take engine out. Should be able to just take box/transfer out and leave the engine in place. Can be done well within a day, as long as it all goes to plan ;)

A gearbox swap by a specialist is much much lower then 14 hours....and you do NOT use a dealer.

Let me phon eThe Garage in Motherwell who have donme my conversions work - or you can phone them yourself - say to Becky that big Ian told you to phone them for an approx time to change a gearbox on a RAV - straight swap.

They have done a gearbox swap on my Punto in a quicker time than a Fiat dealer could even dream - these guys are A1.

The box comes out with dropping the front subframe from memory and is done in situ so to speak. Pse phone The garage - 01698 265303 -

I'm a bit confussed about a gearbox change on one of these - the box is bullet proof - whats happened to it????

You can either post up a reply or PM me and I'll pick it up in the morning. Having 2 1994 RAVs and 1 running almost 320bhp thru the box as to your 127bhp, ahm a bit aghast at a failure..

Problem started with no drive in fifth. Thought it was usual 5th gear prob on rav4. But when mechanic took the side cover off he said 5th was engaging fine so must be something wrong inside gearbox probably 5th slipping on spline (im clueless to his techy speel) and would need to be stripped down to investigate.

There was also a loud rattling in first & second gear, this then started in 3 & 4th. I have to go on the motorway for about 4miles to get to work, but above 45mph the rattling is really loud, it also pulls badly from side to side.

So when i said my gearbox is deceased i should of said it sounds terminal and is very scary to drive in case the whole gearbox disintegrates which is what it sounds like it is about to do everytime i drive it.

As I am in manchester dont think it would make it up to motherwell bothwell..

For a quick idea of how long a gearbox swap takes, phone The Garage at 01698 265303 and ask Becky to ask Dennis, or speak to Marc.

I'm sure they do them in a day. They did a clutch for me well within a day. At least it will give you an idea.

I don't have a spare 4.1 gearbox as I've used them for my 2 conversions, but the box....if its a 4.1 original is really up to 350bhp. Maybe the box has been abused or something else????

Marc and Dennis should have an idea - and say that big Ian told you to phone. I might be along at the Garage tomorrow but I'll probably forget - age challenged!! Try giving me a buzz on 07809361376tomorrow if you like.
