Help! Have lost access to messaging facility - what's happened?

I got this today too. I found out after I got an email saying I had a new message waiting via the forums. But I couldn't get into it. The sender's user name wasn't one of the usual suspects, so I googled it and it seems to be someone who must be using forums for spamming.

So I'm presuming messaging has probably been suspended until it gets sorted?

Same as, I've got two new msgs apparently, but can't view them, comes up with a restricted access message

I too got a message from "mignulikz", but I can't seem to get into my inbox. I looked around on the forum just after I got the message, found the "user" and looked at his/her profile. There it said "banned"... so I guess the message section is closed until the message is deleted

I have in the past sent a couple of messages to members without a reply - now makes me wonder if they did not get them or that they did not realise a message was waiting to be looked at!

When the messaging is working. The intended recipient of the message gets a pop up box saying they have a message (Only get this is they are logged into the forum though)

I've not seen anything to say this is up and working again... so may be a tedious task to remove the malicious spammer software....

It's still being worked on at the moment but Steve (Admin) is hoping to get it sorted asap!

Any outstanding messages should be ok regardless of whether the recipient has read them or not but Steve will confirm when he's fixed the problem.

As I posted in the General section, Invision have come up with a fix after a few sites were hit with the same problem -

"We have received numerous reports from clients regarding spamming on the Personal Message (PM) system in IP.Board 2.3.6 and below. After consulting with reCaptcha (the provider of the captcha system in 2.3.6) we believe that humans are being used to bypass the captcha and then the newly created account is given to an automated script which sends PMs in huge quantities to your members.

The patch we have released today introduces a flood control setting to the PM system in IP.Board 2.3.6. This will limit how fast a member can send PMs thereby giving you and your moderators time to ban the offending account.

The download of 2.3.6 in the client area has been updated with this patch. If you already have 2.3.6 installed, you can download the patch along with instructions in the news announcement on the company forums. Applying the patch is quite easy but if you have questions feel free to contact support. "

Its a scunner when you don't get PMs sent....but I'm sure everyone loves you all the same
