White Smoke From My Verso T180

I have been getting large volumes of white smoke from my verso t180, it is 2 years old and has done 60k. It has been in the main dealers for investigation however they can not find a fault. They have even had a regional expert looking at it, he claims that this smoke comes from the 5th injector cleaning through the system and is quite normal. I am not convinced as when it happens there is alot of smoke, much more than a puff. Anybody any ideas or had a similar problem

When you say large volumes do you mean all the time, when cold, hot, accelerating, tick over etc.... some more info needed to help diagnose but I can't believe it "should" be happening, there is absolutely none from mine......

Had similar issue, looked like a low level red arrows display with the amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. Had the dealer explain the 5th injector technology; not convinced but could find no obvious fault when it went in for a front disk replacement. Had the fault occur when pulling away from the morning rush hour M25 Q's where the car had been moving slowly for an hour or so. Dealer did comment that a head gasket failure is not unheard of at 60K miles; suspect another trip back to the dealer.

Hi new to the forum, did you manage to resolve the situation, my first thoughts were a head gasket, are you losing coolant.

:help: Not had my T180 long but had a long run and during the trip I experienced the "white smoke" in my rear view mirror and, in the words of mikeT180, it looked like a red arrows flyby. It didn't last that long but it happened again about 100 miles down the road (3 times in total I had the "white smoke"), doesn't do it around town though. searched the internet and asked a few "experts", but to no avail, can I ask if you (johnjks1) have found out what your findings was ????, curious to say the least !!!!.

Unlike many other particulate filters, the Toyota DPF catalytic converter is `self-cleaning’, hence is maintenance free throughout the life of the vehicle. An exhaust fuel injection is used to raise the DPF catalyst temperature on a controlled basis and the particles burn off to clear the filter pores. This process requires the addition of a fifth fuel injector which is placed in the exhaust manifold.

Other enhancements to the 2.2 D-4D 135 engine include the fitting of ceramic glow plugs with a higher operating temperature than conventional plugs. These improve low temperature starting and reduce white smoke.

An exhaust fuel injection is used to raise the DPF catalyst temperature on a controlled basis and the particles burn off to clear the filter pores. This process requires the addition of a fifth fuel injector which is placed in the exhaust manifold.

Other enhancements to the 2.2 D-4D 135 engine include the fitting of ceramic glow plugs with a higher operating temperature than conventional plugs. These improve low temperature starting and reduce white smoke.

:( Just returned from the dealers, spoke to the man in servicing dept regarding "white smoke" from my corolla verso T180, no hesitation in replying " we do have an issue with the 2AD engines regarding the head gaskets......... No speile about DPF, 5th injector technology, Dpnr, regen etc etc. It looks like my worst fears have arisen. I will know 100% on monday when the car goes in. Thanks for PARTFINDER for his usual fine coms and will let other T180 "smokers" know the full monty after monday :( GULP.

lots of white smoke when pulling away, after idling for a period etc , james bond smoke screens....

from my experience this has always typified turbocharger failure (oil seals) :( one can normally smell the oil burning.

Oil levels a-ok, but my coolant has , as much as I don't want to say it, dropped slightly in the last 1k miles

:( Just to let people who have been following my saga with Mr T, had car in for investigation into white/grey smoke emissions. give the man the full spiel about what the problem is, which is big (and I mean BIG !!!) plumes of white/ grey smoke being kicked out every now and then, as I couldn't be more specific , Mr T asked if he could have the car for the day to see if they could witness the problem first hand. I duly booked the car in and 9am on a monday morning, promptly dropped the car off. 2 hours later they rang and said that they have road tested my car and that its running A1 and couldn't find a problem. You can imagine my happiness about the request to have the car for a "whole day" only for it to be returned by dinner time none the wiser, so hopefully I can ask you techies out there to help me in my quest to find out where this "smoke" is coming from.

Coolant level has only dropped 1/4" in 3months, oil hasn't moved on the dipstick since I have had it, thanks to info on this site, I have meticulously cleaned the egr valve but all this to no avail, my corolla verso 2.2 D-cat is still randomly kicking out large plumes of white/grey smoke, and to add, I followed the wife in my car her car to see if i could smell anything, its odourless too !!!, no burning oil smell, nothing.

So, techies out there, you know as much as I do about this mysterious "smoke" that toyota can't find an answer to.

Thanks, i did see than originally, but it was for auris and when i took of the engine cover i could not see anything that resembled that on the verso, maybe i'll take another look.

Hi All,

I have an Avensis diesel 2.2 177bhp, plate 2006. (you call it 'T180')

First I realised the white smoke the car was 1,5 years old and had 40.000 kms in it. (not miles, I am from Hungary)

Usually I see the (large amount) of smoke in cold outside temperatures, but not when the engine is cold. Even after a long highway trip the car pulls it out in winter.

I mentioned when I took it to revision several times, they told me that the car is in superb condition, the 5th injector is OK, the coolant and the oil level is not decreasing.

I have read about the head gasket issues, and when the car was 3 years old in december 2009 (with 60.000 kms), I bought extra warranty for 2 more years just to sleep well... (for more than 310 pounds)

Everything was OK till last sunday, when I noticed the engine failure icon, and the car slowed down. The acceleration was so poor, and the maximum speed was 60km/h (cca 40mph)...

I was a lil-lil bit angry, but not that much because of the extra warranty.

On monday the service called: the reason of the car's "safe mode" was the catalysator, which went completely wrong, they can not fix or clean it, it must be replaced.

But the extra warranty (which I have till Dec, 2011) does NOT include the repair costs of the catalysator or the fifth injector.

The cost is 1500 pounds...

I don't know if it is was in connection with the white smoke, but for me it is embarrassing.

IVE HAD THE SAME PROB WITH WHITE SMOKE . BUT MINE ONLY SEEMED TO DO IT IN THE WINTER MONTHS . AND I READ THE THING ABOUT THE 5 INJECTOR SO I PUT IT DOWN TO THE COLD WEATHER AND ENGINE RUNING ABIT RICHER IN THE COLD . ALL THROUGH SUMMER OF 2010 NO SMOKE FINGERS CROSSED FOR THE WINTER . HOPE THIS HELPS

I have also got a T180 and have noticed that it does let out alot of smoke every now and then but cant really tell whether its blue or white, to me it looks like its blue. but been to my mech and he said its the 5th injector. sometimes it happens when you park up for a wile say 15 - 20 mins and then sometimes it will happen when you park up at the lights and then you set off you notice a big cloud behind you. but not really noticed any other problem relating to this so have decided not to worry about it.

What is your economy like. ?

Hey guys... looking for an update to this thread in terms of how everyone went on and whether a confirmed cause was established and (perhaps more importantly) a solution.

I've just recently (beginning of this month) bought a 2007 Corolla Verso T180 with around 95k miles on the clock.

It intermittently spews out a fair bit of smoke (the wife and I disagree as to whether it's white or blue) - there's no regularity to it... the engine can be hot or cold, travelling along the motorway or sat in traffic. Sometime it does it. Sometimes it doesn't. But on my 1.5 to 2hr journey to the office it will do it at least twice.

Had it back to the dealer I bought it from (came with just a 28 Day Warranty). They claim to have had it in to their local Toyota dealership and that Toyota have told them they cannot find anything wrong with it, but suspect it may be oil in the turbo, but further diagnostics are required.

They (the dealer I bought it from) dispute that it's the turbo claiming (and I can verify) that the car otherwise drives perfectly with no other detrimental symptoms so they now claim that they've sent my car to a Toyota "specialist" (this confuses me a little.... who's likely to be more specialist. A Toyota service centre or a Toyota "specialist" - is it wrong that I'm concerned they may be trying to pull the wool over my eyes?).

Your thoughts, comments etc would be very much appreciated.

I have a 2007 T180 Auris exactly the same problem when it got to 60,000k it started throwing out plumes of white smoke after idling or crawling in heavy traffic after accelerating i got enough white smoke to make following drivers brake and stop ,,,, this happened for 15seconds.

my car uses no oil or water .

Rang my dealer and quoted Toyotas AD engine out of warranty instruction 0730 J

I was told drop your car off in the morning and we will fit a new engine free of charge, this seems a bit strange as the engine runs like a dream ,,,,, they didnt want to investigate the problem but were very keen to fit a new engine.

Well who am i to complain ,,,, lets hope it is as good as the one i already have.

I also have a corolla T180, that white/grey smokes seconds after the blue coolant low temperature warning light goes out. I believe this is a characteristic of exhaust aftertreatment system.

As a lot of emission reduction systems will use post-late injection (basically a slight back-fire),  to raise exhaust temperature. I would presume that this isn't attempted until engine is up to operating temperature.

A raised exhaust temperature is needed to ignite the 5th injector, which is positioned in the exhaust path.

The 5th injector is applied to raise the exhaust temperature further, to burn diesel particulate matter from the DPF  (Diesel Particulate Filter), this is known as regeneration.

The DPF assembly usually includes a few troublesome sensors, this may include a Nox sensor.

Some Nox sensors will not come online (work and send a value to ecu) until the sensors operating temperature is reached.

I believe the 5th injector is activated soon after the engine warms up, either to increase exhaust temperature for Nox sensor to work or as part of self diagnostic of the exhaust aftertreatment system.

My car also smokes when pulling away from a junction, I think this is due to regeneration interruption, excess diesel injected into exhaust that is not sufficiently combusted.

The DPF on some models will only regen when travelling at speeds in excess of 40mph. This is why DPF's are not ideal for urban driving.

All in all this does not worry me too much, although the smoke screen in the rear view mirror is rather dramatic🙄

Hi, I am having exact problem. Car just gives out blueish smoke randomly once in a while. Has anyone managed to fix this?
