Ecu Upgrade

Had the ECU upgrade at my first service last week and the engine seemed much smoother after it - yesterday managed a decent run - High Peak in Derbyshire to Crosby (nr Liverpool) up the coast to Blackpool and home via motorway - so a mixture of hills, cross country, towns and motorway, according to display average of 43.2 mpg, far better than anything previous obtained, usually more like 38 mpg overall at best on a good run.

Hi,

I can only dream of the high 30's to the gallon. I have run it on Shell 'V' power from new and am at 33mpg at the moment, although this is local running.

I have 12k on the clock so it should be getting better consumption now but no sign yet.

If you have just had a first service am I right in assuming that you are at 10k ish.

Regards

Interesting Guy,

had mine serviced and ECU upgrade done at the same time as you. Just had a run up to my daughters in Dundee and think that the fuel consumption is still about the same at 48.6mpg for the journey. HOWEVER the OBC error has dropped to 9.4% from 13+%.

On a far more serious note - my daughter borrowed the RAV and managed to hook the front wing around a wooden post in a car park. She said that she had never had an accident before until we reminded her that she had done exactly the same thing with her mothers Justy the week after she passed her test! ( 14 years ago). The panel MIGHT pop out if I remove the inner wing. If it does, then it's Kingo's touch-up kit to the rescue, otherwise DentDoctor or similar as a first try.

Just had a trip in my T180 from Elgin (North Scotland) to Kielder (Northumberland), first long trip since the ECU upgrade. Returned 35mpg, thats with 2 mountain bikes on the back and all the kit for a weekend mountain biking, considering most of the journey was up and down hills I considered it not too bad a return.

Hi Mereside,

I always got much better than 33mph locally with Morrisons supermarket diesel around 35/36 - my mileage is very low for a first service about 2800 miles, whilst I bought it in late Sept 2008 with 9 miles on the clock, it had been pre-registered by Toyota in April 2008!

I think you should be getting better than 33mpg, I certainly use the performance and do not hang about on the motorway and High peak is very hilly.

Look at Threefive's post he does get a very good figure

Sorry to hear about your daughter's mishap - I bet she is very very careful iif s she is allowed in it again!

I do not think I could achieve the mph you got on thr trip to Dundee, None of my trip were anything like that even from new 40mpg was the best I ever had.

Please enlighten me about your OBC (on board computer fuel display?) error ( HOWEVER the OBC error has dropped to 9.4% from 13+%.) - is that OBC against actual calculations? All my quoted figures are for the OBC usually reset for a particular journey as I have to do some very short local trips, often less than a mile and then back home later in the day so they do show a very poor mpg as is expected, when I have a string of meetings to attend.

Hi Guy,

first - I must remind everyone that mine is an XT5 not a 180 engine.

Fuel consumption - I've been keeping track of my fuel consumption with a spreadsheet for best part of 20 years ( - OK, I should get out more! ). I record DATE, ODOMETER READING, FUEL ADDED, COST and since Hoovie ( I think ) raised the issue of the OBC error on the RAV, INDICATED OBC CONSUMPTION. From these figures I calculate the MPG, cost/mile etc. and the difference between the MPG measured by the brim-to-brim method and the OBC.

In another post I said that I had made an error by adding injector cleaner to the tank just before the service and ECU upgrade. IF I had had the forethought to leave the injector cleaner out till I had determined the effect of the ECU upgrade, I could probably have been able to see if the injector cleaner had any effect on performance/economy/OBC calculation. 'Been kicking myself!

Where you drive (live) probably has as much effect on fuel consumption as the way you drive. Hoovie, Anchorman, you and I all live in fairly hilly areas whereas Chatman and others live in much flater locations, so I would argue that MPG is a fairly blunt tool for judging a vehicle
