I have bean told that there is nothing wrong with the RDS on my radio. How can a mechanic know that when the car never left the forcort? Can someone tell me where the Preamp is on the rav, is it in the radio or by the antenna? thanks Gwil

As far as I can tell it is part of the antenna base internally.

You might get to it without pulling down the headlining - from the back door and partly removing the door seal. I've done this to help with attaching my own antennas.

Other possible things:

Unscrew the antenna and look to see if the thread has oxidised. Probably sounds daft, but it can make a difference.

Make sure all the antenna connectors are good and tight (both at head unit and antenna).

Broken or partly broken antenna coax.

Deaf head unit or receiver front end being affected by other strong RF source.

Only sure way is to apply a RF signal generator and estimate the system sensitivity. No way will the dealer be doing that.

With all that electronics on cars today why not. that's why we have to pay £80 per Hr. They are not mechanics they are fitters replacing parts.
