My dealer uses 10/40w Shell i believe

There was a long topic about oil before. I asked why Toyota uses semi instead of full synthetic 5w30. Maybe you are right as Corolla engines had an issue with oil consumption.

5/40 is really the preferred oil for a lot of manufacturers these days on diesels.

Better engine protection from cold and less friction, meaning engine works more freely and that can improve fuel consumption esp. when the oil thickens before a service.

It is said that 70% of engine wear is done during the first 10 mins of use. Even though i take it pretty easy, 5/40 oil would provide better protection.

This is what Toyota gave me when I asked for a top bottle after they did my service.

topupoilte9.jpg

Doesn't say diesel or petrol on it so i guess they use this for both types of engine now.

I may change to Castrol Magnatec 5w40 next service though.

I reckon that is standard then for dealerships, its Shell helix apparently.

Thanks for posting that.

Even after 10k (just before my second service) my oil level had only dropped a couple of mm on the stick so its not drinking it, not worried about that, just want the best protection.

Mines a little thirsty when it comes to the oil. But it is still within the manual guide lines. But looking on the bright side I see it as a constant oil change

I have seen 5w-30 full-synth Toyota. The bottle was similar to this one.

I use Mobil1 ESP 5W-30. After 4000km the level is the same as at the begining

For this engine 5W-30 is recommended (ACEA C1 or B5)

Guys,

I did this topic here http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=93280

Want to clear it up that the book recommends 5w30 oil and not 5w40.

I am having my service next weekend and i will be providing my own oil, they are going to be 5w30.

The dealers like others said uses 10w40, I want to use the recommended oil to see if there are differences.

Good luck!

You should use 5W-30 oil in the 2.2 D-CAT engine, nothing else is used at the dealerships here in Sweden.

Castrol EDGE 5W-30 has been used in mine for 40000km's and Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 for the last 3500km's and my cars latest consumption figures are 42MPG with AC & AUX heater (I average 80 mph) with my ProMotech dieseltuning box 212bhp & 450Nm.

Next week when my warranties expires I will remove the cat and see what it does to my performance/consumption.

Next oilservice I will do myself and then I probably will use the Valvoline Synpower XL-III 5W-30 because I get a god deal on Valvoline oils and that the long drainformula will get good economy (30000km's) in my opinion the best oil on the market right now.

PS

I will get a new Toyota Tundra TRD 5,7 CREWMAX LIMITED that sports a V8 engine with 386hp DIN, it will arrive at my door in the beginning of June.

The stated MPG is 19 for this beast.

You're right, Toyota says 5W-30.

But,ifyou live in a country that temperature can reach up to 40ºC, the 5W-40 is more useful to preserve the engine, isn't it right?

But for lower temps, the 5W-30 is the best oil for all D4D engines.

Correct. 5w30 is geared toward lower band of temps, 10w40 gives you better high temp protection as the oil stays relatively thick at high temp.

Since i am in the UK i think 5w30 is what should be used and should ultimately give me better economy, too.

I shall see.

Well re-reading this thread I think i'll be trying out 5w30 this summer. Maybe it will help/sort out my starting problem since I have the start/stop button.

I read on another thread somewhere ( i think from kingo, don't quote me) that a 1.6 something or other uses thinner oil due to having the stop/start button.

Cant hurt......................

The figures I have say that the recommended grade is 5w-30 in all Auris's. It's probably the grade to stick with, unless you thrash it, in which case, go for a 5w-40

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-653-5w-30.aspx

As Auris's are fairly new cars, they're worth spending a few extra pounds on, so I'd go for something like the Motul X-Max, Mobil 1 ESP, or the Motul Eco-Energy. They are all better quality than the Toyota stuff.

The stop start thingy shouldn't make any difference to the oil grade, unless they are trying to get every possible mpg they can, in which case they would probably say use a 0w-20.

I think one of the reasons the toyota garages use 10/40 is to cut down on the amount of oil the engine gets through; by using a thicker oil.

Still i wished they used 5/30 and i shall change my oil over the summer.

5w30 is recommended for these engines. There is no reason to use 10w40!!!

My handbook states 5w30 semi-synthetic.

My local dealer uses large drums of Toyota 5w30 semi-synthetic.

I top up with 5w30 semi-synthetic between services and it consumes 2 litres per 10k miles (service interval).

Why use something other than what is specified?

5W30 as semi is almost unavailable. There supposed to be Shell F 5W30 semi but I have seen it at one Shell garage so far. It was £10.99 /1l so the same as you can get full synthetic Castrol from Halfords. I am not sure how much Toyota charges for 10W40.

Depends if you must have a big brand:

Halfords do their own semi 5w30

Wilkinsons also do their own semi 5w30

and Comma definately do a semi 5w30 from many Motormania/Motorworld-type outlets...like this http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?pli...p1394&rs=gb

I am not engine oil expert but I know a little about chemistry. If you compare not only the numbers on the box but also things like oxydation, changes in temperatures, cokability etc (all the stuff that has an impact on aging process and cleaning capabilities) you will find differences between brands. I think change interval 10000miles for semi is quite long so the oil should be good quality- some people may say that for normal engine use (not racing etc) is OK.
