What Engine Oil Do You Use?

Depends if you must have a big brand:

Halfords do their own semi 5w30

Wilkinsons also do their own semi 5w30

and Comma definately do a semi 5w30 from many Motormania/Motorworld-type outlets...like this http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?pli...p1394&rs=gb

I am not engine oil expert but I know a little about chemistry. If you compare not only the numbers on the box but also things like oxydation, changes in temperatures, cokability etc (all the stuff that has an impact on aging process and cleaning capabilities) you will find differences between brands. I think change interval 10000miles for semi is quite long so the oil should be good quality- some people may say that for normal engine use (not racing etc) is OK.

We've got the Fuchs Titan XTR 5w-30, a good semi-synthetic. With semi-synthetics you need to be aware of what you are buying. Manufacturers do not tell customers the percentage that is synthetic. It can be 1% synthetic and they can still sell it in the same was as one that is 50/50 mineral/synthetic. Part of the blend is a basic mineral oil, so that will breakdown and loose some of it's properties a lot sooner than the synthetic part of the oil, so I would replace it a lot sooner than 10k.

Hi oilman. I have checked your website before but I could not find Titan XTR 5W30 as semi (only 10W40 or full synthetic 5W30). Could you link it?

You found the correct one, sadly its a play on words by Fuchs. It is sold as a synthetic but in reality it is not, its what they call a hydrocracked mineral oil. Imagine if you will the better half of a semi synthetic. All 100% mineral based.

Cheers

I bought myself 8 litres of Castrol Magnetec 5w30 (£19/4ltr @ Costco) Fully Synth to supply my servicing this weekend.

Has anyone got any experience with the Castrol?

I have used Edge, but 0W-30. I have 2.0d4d engine, so not the same situation. My car stared to burn it after ~8000km, but not too much (to middle from max level). I heard the same from others, after ~8-9000km it is weared and engine start to burn it.

Well 2nd tank of fuel since my service and there is a difference with 5w30.

1. On startup the car feels looser and more ready to go.

2. Slightly quieter running

3. MPG increased (over 2 tanks 39mpg in 80% town)

4. Slightly more eager.

Now i can't say that this is ALL due to the oil because I had an extensive service at the same time, but i do believe the oil has made a difference.

I now have to keep an eye on the oil level as it is not recommended to go from thicker to thinner oil, but since the car is only 24k miles new, i think it should be ok.

  • 2 weeks later...

Guys,

Looking at this topic, it would appear that my 2.0 d4d auris has 10-40w semi synthetic. It has been using a bit of oil and I want to keep it near the top level....

so should I go the the shops and but some 10-40w Shell helix or should i pay the extra for the toyota stuff?

Could I damage the engine by having 2 diff brands of 10-40w semi in my engine?

Cheers!

When i asked my service manager he said they use Shell helix 10w/40 - i'm sure they will tell you the brand if you ask; imo it is better to match it :)

Brand doesn't really matter as long as you keep the viscosity and ACEA standards right. These days you can mix most of the oils even synthetic with non synthetic
