Change Gear Problem

I’ve recently bought the new Auris 1.3 with 6 gears. I have a problem changing from the 5th to the 4th gear.

At first I thought I was doing something wrong as it was the first time I was driving a car with 6 gears. I’ve asked a colleague of mine to test it who has a 6 gear car longer than me. He noticed the same problem but fewer times.

After “debugging” I’ve narrowed down the problem to having difficulty changing from 5th to 4th only when having low RPMs.

Has anyone noticed something similar? I’m taking the car back to the dealer for a check-up.

I had my car checked and they found nothing wrong with it, but still having trouble changing gears. I've tried other Auris the had for Test Drive and in all I had the same problem.

I've now driven another two (thre in total) 6 gear cars with no problem.

I came to the conclusion that Toyota's (at least in Auris) six gear system is of low quality.

Nope. That is a shame. The gear box is one of the best things about the Auris... smoother than the new Civic that is for sure.

I've got the same problem shifting from 5 to 4. Got the new 1.6 engine and 6-speed gearbox. The gearbox is really smooth in general, except shifting from 5 to 4. Haven't checked out at what rpm it occurs. I'll be at the dealers friday to replace the water jets, I will bring this shifting problem to their attention.

Guys I really think it is user error. You have to press the clutch all the way down.

I haven't checked it at 100 km/h, but at 120 km/h it's around 3000 rpm in 6, don't know how much in 5. I'll check.

I do press the clutch all the way down, but the problem only occurs when shifting from 5 to 4, not from 6 to 5, 4 to 3, etc.

I'm dutch, I'll try to explain it in my best english... :D

There is no grinding or clanking (had to look up that word), it's just that the shift stick doesn't move as smoothly into 4th gear (only shifting down) as it does into other gears. Shifting up from 3 is no problem.

Iosif stated that it only occurs at low revs, I haven't tested it yet.

Update: I told the dealer about this issue, they did not have any other complaints yet. They asked me to stay in touch about this in the next few months. There are only 1200 kms on the clock at this time.

I drive 15 years now and never had this problem, though I drove only 5 gear sifts, now have tested other cars with 6 gears and no problem. Unfortunatelly I cannot drive the new Avensis with similar 6 gears to have an opinion.

Hi Iosif,

I have a Jan 08 SR180 and have no problems at all with the gearbox.

The car is going very well.

Thanks

Paul
