Knocking

i have a celica 01 plate 1.8 vvtl-i

theres a slight knocking noise coming from the front offside, it makes a knock when braking but doesn't make a noise when going over speed humps.

there are rubber pads that are sandwhiched between the bottom of the suspension spring and the shock absorber, this pad is heavily cracked and looks as if the spring is coming in contact with the metal of the shock, is this the cause of the noise or does someone know what it could be
