Carina E 1.6 Xli Oil Consumption

Recommended Posts

Hello to all

My Toyota is Carina E 1.6 XLi 1994 with 4A-FE engine (85Kw-115hp) and with 120.000 Km.

So,my question is "What is normal oil consumption" for this model.

I use Total Quartz 9000 oil and consumption of oil is about 1-1,5 L. between every oil change at 8000 Km

(I must change oil at max. 8000 km because fuel quality in my country is poor and I practice very intensive city stop&go driving)

My dilema is that in users manual says that is normal to consumes about 1 L. every 1000 Km but in extreme conditions such as driving at high speeds (rpm) and city driving

I must be honest, sometimes when I,m on highvay I drive very fast ..more than 140 km/h (or more than 4500Rpm)

Untill today no malfunctions is ocured on engine, car body or electrical system

Hi! I own the exactly the same car as you (in France). I change the engine oil every 10000kms with semi-synthetic 10W40 oil.

The oil consumption is less than the manual says, about 1L every 3000kms.

By the way, my Carina have 215000kms and it touch the "red zone" several time during the week... without any problem, usual maintenance only. What a mecanic !

(sorry for my poor english, with a little effort, you could understand what I would like to say...)

OK,but manual says "for very hard drive conditions",long time red zone or speed, city driving.. who knows what Toyota means under "heavy or extreme" conditions"

No problem muzah I undeerstand you (and my english is poor to) :)

Precise,my Carina E when I last change my oil at 8000 Km oil level was at minimum on the oil check stick. But I must mentoin,as before, wery heavy drive conditions and wery suspect gasoline quality.

Car is maybe "ou of date" design but is very durable. For example exhaust system is still original with several points of rust.

For car that is 15 years old this is fantastic result. Usual maintance to. Car is produced in 1994 in Japan, every electrical part is Denso. Beautyful red color (no metalic)

Thanks ;)

I check sometime the oil level, not every week/kilometers.

It appends 1 or 2 time the oil level was low. I guess it was after a rought drive period (foot a bit heavy on the gaz pedal... but the sound of this little engine is sometime amazing).

My car is dark green colored, still beautiful unless some scratches or "rock impact" (?). Built in 1993 (very first models I guess), it's parked (?) outside for years without any difficulty on start or anything else. And "cerise sur le gâteau" (french expression : "cheery on the cake" litteraly), the Battery really seems to be the original one (toyota brand name on it).

So, as the oil consumption is near or less the numbers wrote on the manual, I think everything is normal.

Just check the oil level to avoid a (very or destructive) low level.
