St 183 Switches

hi all, have recently purchased a Celica ST 183 jap import. On left hand side just next to steering column i have two switches..... Rev/AWS and a sport switch. Was told that when parking push the Rev/AWS in and this turns off the AWS........ it doesnt my all wheel steer is working with switch in or out, so im thinking the sport switch is not working either,is this supposed to tighten suspension????? Have got various manuals for 1993 Celica but it mainly covers ST182 and the American models. Am i supposed to get a warning light on dash if either switch is pushed?? does anyone have the same model 1993 ST183 with 3S-GE engine, that could help with my problem? Also can i get hold of the Jap manual for this model???? Any help with be greatly appriciated, thanks in advance all,Steve

check the ecu for fault codes , then take it from there.

im no expert but from what i read , the 4ws switches off when button is pressed WITH reverse gear selected , the rear wheels then straighten up.

sport mode when pressed drops the suspension at speeds above 50 mph . IIRC .

the 4ws light . lights up when the system is faulty - nothing to say this bulb has blown though or removed for a "sale"

not sure this will work but worth a try - http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/EE3vSfUsuQwyc...ota4wspage2.gif

Thanks GT4,i was thinking along the lines of the "bulb" theory, but didnt want to tear out the dash..... The 4ws definately works, just dont turn off with switch and reverse selected, and living here we cant drive over forty,so cant test sport mode  . Will look at bulb, also where can i get a list of fault codes??? may get a mechanic in to plug his machine in and test. The link is dead that you posted, but thanks for your help mate,

Thanks again GT4,had the dash out today and took a look at the lights on instrument panel, there is no provision for a AWS light,so im thinking its been swapped out for a different cluster when it was converted to MPH from KMH. I have power to both the Sport and AWS/REV switch,it just dont turn off the AWS when reversing, could it be back up motor has packed up???. And with no warning light on dash if the AWS should fail, will it send me off into a ditch or is there a safety to stop rear wheels from turning??? Thanks again for all your help in finding stuff out for me mate

try joining TC and E1 with a paperclip and see if any dash lights flag up any error codes. not sure if the 4ws bulb would of been the bulb to flash error codes , but its worth trying.

look under bonnet for diagnostics port ,its black 2" x 1" with "DIAGNOSTICS" stamped ontop. look under the lid to see where tc and e1 are located and with ign off join them , switch ign on and look at dash for any blinking lights.

there is also a relay that controls the back up motor power , it may be at fault , but you really need to check for error codes , guessing is no good. here's the rest of the error codes.
