Hello Andy

Never driven a 4.2 RAV [i think that it what you have] but certainly with my 4.3 D4D, first to second change is considerably smoother if a bit of leftward pressure is applied when pulling the stick back. I believe others have found the same.

Doubtless there will be some seasoned 4.2 drivers who can advise more fully

Thanks for the comment I will try that !!!!

just to mention its a 4.2 (2004) with only 35,000 miles

Just feels gear change is not smooth compared to other cars ive had and dont want to damage gearbox or linkage

Notchy gearchange is not uncommon with 4.2s. If you search the RAV section with the word notchy you will get several hits.
