Sweet! Brilliant work. Can't remember the last time I saw one of those on the road.

So remind me again what engine it has? (I haven't followed this from the start and am new to Toyota). 1600 N/A???

Posted

Thank you dude! :D Tell me about it, they're rarer than hens teeth nowadays.

Yeh it a 1.6 (1587cc) Twin Cam 4A-GE. There were a few different versions fitted to these but mines an '89 so she's one of the earlier GTi's :)

Nice. Gotta love a bit of twin cam action! What's the bhp?

Mind you, even if it had 5 bhp I reckon the smiles per mile would more than make up for it!!!

I imagine it's pretty nippy though?

Posted

Sure do!:D This particular unit had something like 127BHP - there were loads of differences lol - and now with an exhaust and filter I hope to have about 130-135BHP.

Well I am told they're pretty swift, but I have to be honest and say I have never driven it or any other AE92 GTi.... From what I am told they're very swift and handle like they're on rails with a few suspension upgrades. :D

Awesome project!

My stepfather had one too when he was young, adorable carz :D

Cheers mate, they're a whole lot of fun! :D

Some more progress to report - I refitted the Sump with a mate of mine there to make sure I didn't kill myself

To get to the bolts next to the Gearbox, the central Engine-Mount had to be removed, and so the Sub-Frame had to be removed. It is doable with it in but it honestly is much easier with it removed. It would also be worth undoing the Down-Pipe to Exhaust-Manifold bolts, the Flexi Joint will take the strain and it makes it easy to get around the area.

Unfortunately it turns out the Leak is from somewhere else, I suspect the Baffle-Plate or the Pump, however I am hoping that this has shifted things around a little thus plugging the leak again. :D

Took us 5 hours, but that was mainly because it was the first time I'd done it and there were some issues with fitting it back up. :)

Well done mate, hopefully you won't need this done again!

I enquired about an e-plate GTI thinking it may be a runner, then looked at the MOT history and saw it mentioned inner and outer wings for the last 3 mot's so decided to give it a miss... ;->

I'll be waiting for you to get bored of yours and come in with a cheeky offer of a grand for it!

Posted

Yeh hopefully mate! Oh dear... well the wings aren't too bad. Are you on about the panels or the chassis rails?

haha assuming I will ever sell it. I really couldn't, it's given and taken way too much  ;)

Hey pal...

I checked my GTi stock and I cant find any window visor..

Man your Corolla is looking more BADASS every time I look into your thread

And about your oil leak, where does it leak down? (the oil drop)

Ive restored so many of those 4age´s, my monney is on bad gasket around the crankshaft on

the end where the flywheel goes on the shaft..

Im restoring one of mine 4age right as I speak and when I got it down to my basement that gasket was leaking

so much oil, i could almoast drain the sump from that end of the block

Good luck mate

Some truly epic news - I have finally sorted the idling and the core plug seems to have sealed itself.... :D

Here is a quick vid, basically I cleared the air lock from the matrix and the Cold Idle Circuit, which was the main issue. The video is just there for you to hear her ;)

Excuse my messed up accent... dunno what happened there

Chronologically speaking it's a real mess so sorry about that, but it works for me :D I will be adding in pictures and footage from Japfest later but for now this is the kind of preview ;)

Cheers mate. It doesn't follow true to the story but it works

Got another small update for ya'll :D

Basically I found a way of nabbing all the clips I needed from the old Tail-gates for mine and now it's fitted! :D

I also fitted up the O/S Rear Seat-Belt Guide, a small task but a bugger of a job when you have to fab your own kit to get it to fit

And here are some general porn shots:

Not far off now me thinks :D I'm going to have to Tiger Seal the Skirts on tomorrow which is going to be interesting seeing as I have never done anything like this before but I'm sure I'll get it perfect eventually :thumbsup:

Maybe the Mud-Flaps too but there are absolutely not fixings there at all for them but I don't want to place al of my trust in Tiger Seal...

Yeah thanks mate! It seems like every week I'm seeing another one going up on eBay for spares :(

Glad I could give one such an extensive new lease of life :D

I have a considerable amount of progress to report today! :D

First up was securing the rear of the O/S Side-Skirt, and all I can say is that calling it a pig of a job is the biggest understatement made since someone said: "That Hitler bloke seems alright to me." :censor:

I had to hold it for 30 minutes until I thought that maybe the Tiger Seal would hold it but oh no no no no no no no... I took my hands away and thought "I am the tits!!!" and then crrrk it pulls away and I have to start again. FAIL.

Still, I kept at it and it seems to have held but the clamp is still there for good measure. I also fitted up the front Skirt spat and to seal them off I cut an old washer hose in half and just whacked it in place. It's only held on with a bolt at the bottom and a bolt at the top, the same goes for the other side.

As I waited the urge to fit up the Mud-Flaps took over:

abec964b.jpg

The Flaps are held in with a nut and bolt at the bottom and another at the top, the other side needs a hole drilling to do this though - that's for tomorrow.

Some of the O/S Skirts:

Then the N/S Skirt:

Flaps too:

And again, some general AE92 Pornography:

2007d570.jpg

7a381ddf.jpg

Tomorrow I'll be glueing the N/S Skirt in like I did the O/S, but for now the clamp is occupied  I'll also bring the right drill bit this time to secure the bumper and Mud-Flap on the N/S. If I don't get too down-hearted about it I may also get on with the Oil Pressure Sender.

I have problems with my Headlamps though:

*When you put on the Side Lights, only the O/S is on - New bulb I'm guessing

*When you go to Full-Beam, they're fine

*When you go to Dipped-Beam, the O/S goes off and the N/S stays on. :g:

Not a huge issue right this second but it will be for the MOT.

On another note, I managed to pick up and fit the Windscreen interior trim and the A-B-Pillar trims, so thank you Waqarv so much for those!!!

If someone can shed some light on this it'd be much appreciated

Cheers,

Urgh not what I want to hear :( Thanks for letting me know though mate. I'll see if I can source one easily enough..

Made a fair chunk of progress today, it was an awful lot of faffing to get it all done but it's made a huge difference to the interior :D

First off though I clamped up the N/S Skirt:

Fitting up the Plastic:

The sheeting was an utter mare but I got there in the end...

Grab Handle

Lock Handle

c01fb983.jpg

The O/S Card is in but needs the Lock Handle putting in tomorrow, the rest of it is looking awesome though. So once the Pedals and Sunroof are in the interior just needs a clean :D

Hopefully the N/S Skirt will have hardened off properly tomorrow when I go back to fit the Lock Handle. I'll most likely have to sort out the oil leak and timing too. Once they're done, I'm pretty well stuck waiting for the bloody Sunroof and Indicators..

Still cant beleive how much passion youve had for this car, I would have gone bald by now... looks WOW.

any plans for interior or leaving it standard? I saw a set of seat on eBay for the gti? thought you might be interested in a possible leather seats project????
