Hi all,

I've found that Black Diamond brake-pads are slightly cheaper than EBC pads and they do them for the front aswell.

Are they good at a range of temperatures and are they going to go nicely with my Black Diamond Combination discs?

Thanks for the help and advice. :)

Got another update;

We have found the suspension arm bolts!!! They have been taped to the wall so we never lose them again........

Then, me and Davis tinted the indicator side of the tail-lights and they look brilliant against the ruby red at the bottom. It was very easy, all that we had to do was mask off the top of the unit and the rubber edge including the red beneath the indicator strip and then spray it with body-work black spray. Just spray until you can no longer see the orange in dim(ish) light and they will look awesome when put back on the car. :)

Then we rubbed down the front grille and are currently spraying it black, layer by layer. We will then lacquer it with a good few layers, swiftly followed by the addition of black mesh to show up the red horns and bonnet release catch that will be behind it.

If anyone requires any help or advice regarding the tinting of tail lights, feel free to ask.

Just finished spraying the grille with lasquer. Will be great when the mesh is put on tomorrow. I will get some pictures up as and when it's done.

Careful when spraying your rear lights as the MOT inspectors and the local police do not like it.

They claim that the painted lenses do not allow sufficient light through and can cause accidents when following vehicles are unable to see the lights.

I know that they look cool but they can be classed as illegal for road use. :(

I've got a spare set to swap them over and I tested the transparency and they seemed fine.

Thanks for your words of concern, but I've taken those facts into consideration. :)

Just finished making the new grille up.

Took an hour and 20 to fit the mesh without any glue and it looks pretty good.

It took 6 coats of Escort Cosworth black paint, and 7 of tinned lacquer and some black aluminium mesh. All spread over a time scale of 18 hours.

Cheers mate,

There are three clip stem things on the top of the grill and I cut the mesh so that it pushes over each one quite tightly. I then pushed the mesh at the bottom part of the grill into a notch that I made in two thin supporting fin things that were behind the grill. It holds really tight with no rattle.

If you want one, I can make one for you. I have cut out the centre section bit so its gaping more. It will take a week for me to complete it because I have to fill, prime, spray, lacquer and then fit the mesh.

I'll do it for free too. ;)

Still saving for calipers seeing as I have 4 peoples birthday's within 2 days and I need to get them some presents and such.

Getting tired of having no money!!!

Finally found people that sell red-stuff pads for the front. I've yet to confirm if they are the right size or not, but its still good!

I think that when I have got most of the parts, I'll post up all the different websites that I've purchased them from so that every GTi owner can use them if they don't know about them. :)

I won't need tp pay for my rims anymore because ADEMEISTER will own them until I can afford to pay them back min the years to come. Once the car is completed next year (Hopefully) then I let them use it as a demo car at Jap Shows etc. :yahoo:

Times are looking desparate for finances..... doesn't look good for GTi progress any time soon.....

Just realised that I haven't posted up pics of the brakes. :)

Feast upon their beauty! :P

I had to cut and fit the anti-squeel shims myself but it only took me 20 minutes. They prove annoying when you fit the caliper over the pads because the shims get torn at the corners! :angry:

But I persisted and got one fitted so far! :D

A few notes about the brakes:

Make sure that when you remove and refit any of the bolts on the brake system, you coat them in 3-in-1 so that they get cleaned up and go back in with greater ease. It will also help when it comes to changing them again.

Do NOT use a clamp to suppress the calliper piston, it will snap and fly off! Use a pair of pliers, and keep persisting with it. Or you can use a tool specific to the job, I have forgotten what it is called, but go to a good motor parts retailer such as Motorserve and they sell them for about £30-£40. It make it much easier to compress the piston!

Just ask for any help with fitting the pads. I'll even take mine apart to lead you through how to replace the pads if need be.

looking very cool. keep it up. hows the engine coming on?

Cheers mate.

The engine has come to a scheduled standstill at the moment because of a severe lack of funds. I have had to pay for an expensive bottle of German wine for my grandads birthday, £20 for my mums birthday and £50 for my nans birthday (I got her some Chanel No.5 body lotion) :lol:

I have tallied up how much I need for parts though. To get an oil-filter, fuel-filter, 0.8mm head gasket, exhaust sealent and gaskets and whole car gasket set along with CV joint boots, it will cost me around £220. May sound like a lot, but Toyota are asking for £140 just for a head gasket set!

I'll have aquired all of this by christmas and the engine bay may have been resprayed by then too. After christmas I will start to put the engine back together and slot it in with all of the new shiny parts! :yahoo:

Next year I will have saved up for all of the suspension, paint and panels. ADEMEISTER will buy me the rims and spray the car for me F.o.C. which to me, means that I will have my car complete by the end of next year. :)

Lets hope you have enough money for driving lessons!!

keep up the good work tho, if your still saving for parts then it really is worth having a good shop around. Try making friends with a mechanic that your dad/family use and offer him cash to buy in parts trade.

Or get some wine and body lotion from tescos

haha

Haha lol,

I did two weeks work experience with my mate Davis and we are quite good friends with the mechanic, so hopefully he can give me some cheap sources etc.

I will worry about lessons when I get to them, I'm 15 and won't be driving it anywhere once its finished next year, because ADEMEISTER will do the paint and body for free providing that I let them drive it to shows and use it as a demo car for the years until I get my liscence.

bin a while since i read the thread, Good job, The removal of the engine can give you loads more to do while you save cash. Now would be a great time to clear up the engine bay! Maybe look into a mild wire tuck.....spraying the inside of the engine bay, General cleaning up would be great now as you have the time and space.

Yeh thanks mate, I should have the bay done by christmas. My friend calling in a favour from another friend. :)

I will drill the rest of the rust off the struts first, then I'll degrease it ready for respray.

Have taken delivery of late-spec front calipers today. Really pleased.

I had to degrease them and oil up the bolts but was easy enough to give it a couple of coats of Hamerite Gloss red. They look really good just on the bench :lol:

What size pad do they take? I need to know the right dimensions so that I buy the right pads from EBC.

Pics will be up in a few days. :)

Had a good long day of working on the GTI, I managed to get both front wings off, and they have rotten underneath the arch very nastily so I'll be glad to get the new ones in.

The doors are even worse than I origianlly thought, they have rotted underneath all of the rubber sealant strips and along each corner! Will keep all electrics fo spares.

The pads look like they are the same size as the early spec cars, just the discs are wider.

Got pics now.

First, I got the O/S wing off;

IMG_0948.jpg

IMG_0949.jpg

Then the door trims came off;

IMG_0953.jpg

Next to go after much faffing with the electrics was the O/S door;

IMG_0955.jpg

IMG_0956.jpg

Then the N/S wing and door after less faffing with the electrics;

IMG_0959.jpg

IMG_0957.jpg

Pic of what was left :lol:

IMG_0958.jpg

New panels will be ordered over the phone, something wrong with their online transactions system :rolleyes:

I found that it was really quite easy to remove the front wings, all I had to do was undo all the bolts underneath the splash shield, remove the shield, undo two bolts that are behind the front section of the side skirts and undo the bolts along the top of the wing in the engine bay and the the one near the door hinge.

Use a hard chisel to prize the top of the wing from the engine bay. You may need a hammer to knock it through the sealant but it still takes only 15 minutes.

Comments and thoughts are welcome.
