Hi im new to the forum as i havent even got my toyota yet.

i went to but a toyota lucida 2.2 auto diesel, tonight that i bought on eBay. i bought it as spares or repairs as it needed a water pump.

i got the car started after a while but as i put it into gear it clunked and stalled.

now when i try and turn the car it sounds like its just spinning over, doesnt sound like the engines turning over.

im just wondering if anyone on heres got any idea of whats wrong with it. cheers in advance

Be very careful, stories such as water pump, thermostat, radiator, slight smoke etc etc are all a B*****IT cover meaning cracked cylinder head. This is the number one killer of these cars and it is VERY common.

Don't get me wrong those things do break but people use them as a good excuse to explain away a cracked head that they have been quoted £1500 to fix.

It sounds as though your cam belt could have snapped. The trouble starting could well have been due to water in the combustion chamber, again a common sign of a cracked head. Now these can lead to a hydraulic lock. If you try and crank the engine under these conditions it can weaken the belt to the point where it snaps taking out the valves and hence the engine just spins.

Alternatively the bendix on your starter motor could not be coming out or the ring gear is slipping on the flywheel.

Trust me these cars can become a money pit very quickly and buying a "cheap fixer upper" can turn out to be a "very expensive fixer upper"

My friend I don't wish to be rude, but if you don't know where to find the cambelt then considering buying a car to fix is not the right plan for you.

It's in the front o fthe engine and is well covered by the cambelt housing. To own one of these cars you must either

1. Have money

2. be a mechanic.

It's going to be a top and bottom job I am afraid. Get the front of the car up on ramps.
