Heavy Clutch

I have a 2005 Avensis D4D estate, a great car best one i've had. One small problem that has now become a real problem is the clutch, it is heavy. When i got the car I put the heavier pedal down to the car being a diesel etc and it didn't bother me,I'm now getting pains in my left knee when driving not so good. The car drives very well, gear changes are smooth and there are no noises when changing gear. What i really wanted to ask was is the heavy clutch normal for the D4D version and more imprtantly is there anything i can do to make it lighter other than changing cars which i dont really want to do.

Thanks

I don't know much specifically about the Avensis yet, but a previous car (Mk2 Cavalier) had a heavy clutch. This turned out to be the cable, which I only discovered after it broke.

A new cable should not cost a lot or be too difficult to fit.

How many miles has your car done? Is it over 80,000.

I think the best reply will be given by respective cars owners to compare.

cheers

This probably isn't much help, but my D4D Yaris' clutch is comparable to petrol cars I have driven, while my brother's Corolla 2.0 D4D's clutch feels more like a van's!

I used to have an Avensis T180, but after enduring the clutch for 11 months I could't stand the pain in my left knee any more and had to sell what was otherwise a brilliant car. I do admit that I have a slightly weak knee but this is the first car that I have ever had any problem with (I previously had a V6 petrol Jag with no problems) but the Avensis was my first diesel. I bought the car new and the dealers said there was no problem with the clutch, but said they are all heavier than petrols with the T180 being worst of all due to the increased spring rates on the clutch pressure plate to cope with the high torque of the engine. Although I would't describe the clutch as being 'heavy', more like extremely 'springy' on release and it's this that causes the problems with knee pain in stop start driving.

I have the very same car and must admit the clutch is quite heavy on it. So it seems that it is inherent in the car
