I want to share with you my story of how I fixed my Avensis ignition switch and problems dealing with.

Basically my Avensis was starting erratically, and it was getting worse in the last week. I Googled the problem to find the possible causes because the Battery was good and when starter did work, it started strongly. The Google found answer in this forum.

With that information I sourced the switch from Japarts at £35 and bought one. Toyota charge £56! Part number: 84450 02010.

I had a bit of difficulty removing one of the screw from the switch, but after removing the lower dashboard panel it access was easier. Then I saw a new problem. The switch was wrong! :censor: The pinouts were different and the missing pin was in a different position.

I dismantled and cleaned the old switch and re-assembled it. The car started fine so I had use of the car. The next day the problem came back. I was going back Japarts to exchange the switch but they told me that the whole consignment had to go back because they were all wrong. New stock was due on Monday (It was Friday). Worse still the old switch failed to start outside the shop on the opposite side of London to where I live.

Another customer gave a lift to Jemca Hendon, a short distance away and I bought a switch from them. I was back at my car and the new switch in place in 20 minutes. The car started fine.

It is not Japarts fault that they were given wrong stock. The sales person had even expected me because another customer had the same problem and had informed them. I got an instant refund.

It ended okay but if the nearest Toyota dealer was miles not yards away, it could have been a nightmare.
