Noisey Engine When Ideling

Hi everyone, its my first post so be gentle :)

I have tried searching the forum but am struggling to find an answer. Basically when the car is ideling it sounds very rough. Its a taptey noise as if someone has left a spanner inside the engine. It sounds like it is coming from the timing chain. The engine sounds much better when revved to around 1,000 rpm. The engine idles at what i can only assume is 500 revs (hard to tell as its electronic however it only lights up the first fat bar).

To try and raise the idle speed i adjusted the throttle however the engine seems to know that I am doing this and just ignores it and readjusts the speed after about 10 seconds.

I have changed the oil, spark plugs, air filter. (Oil is Comma 5/30)

Anyone any ideas?

How many miles...

is the noise comming from the top or bottom ?

I am not sure if the oil has run low(only just got it), it was certainly dirty and even after an oil change is still dirty.

I think the noise is from the top end. The car has done 78k miles. Cheers

Sounds like the timing chain to me.

These can start to rattle if the oil changes have been neglected.

You say the oil has been changed and is still dirty? I would change it again or flush it. ;)

Supprisingly mine isn't that bad when cold, its much worse when hot as the revs drop very low.

Should i use the Forte stuff for flushing? Only ever used this once in all my other cars i have used diesel oil as a cleaner.

The engine does sound rough when idleing at 500 rpm,(should be approx 650 - 750 rpm) a fouled up sensor is usually the cause. Have you had a look at a similar problem by Kcs (April 24) follow the link, you never know it may fix your fault too.
