Swine/pig Flu

According to the papers it is spreading from Country to Country with great rapidity. There are people suspected of having it, both here & in the UK.

Is this going to be a Pandemic or just another false alarm ? It is about all we need on top of the current Global recession - something like the flu epidemic after the 1st World War, which if my memory serves me, killed more than the War did :(

Warts, varucas, welders flash, brewers droop.....

Anything can be blown out of proportion with the right media spin. This will kill no one in the UK.. the media are taking the wee flagging all the countries it has now infected. It can be treated (unlike brewers droop).

Dont believe the hype!

The World Health Organisation raised the threat level from 4 to 5 yesterday , meaning that a world wide pandemic is imminent , their words not mine .

However we shall just have to wait and see , we have had false alarms with aids & bird flu in the past as they were supposed to have wiped out millions , so i sincerely hope that the W.H.O have got this one wrong as well , but in the event that they are right the government insists that they are well placed to cope as they have vast stockpiles of tamiflu , the virus unlike birdflu is said to spread from human to human very easily whereby one sneeze can infect upto 20 people immediately with an incubation period of 7 days , theres a split of oppinion between governments as to the best way to protect aganst infection , some are investing in face masks , and others in tamiflu , personally i would prefer the government to invest in both , tamiflu will treat you once you have been infected , where as facemasks can stop you being infected in the first place . If by chance there was a pandemic in the UK it would'nt bother me in the slightest if i had to wear a face mask , infact the wife reckons it would be an improvement , :bag::huh: ... i dunno people in glasshouses :blow: ;)

LoL , I'm surprised the doctor did'nt prescribe oinkment ( sorry ) i went to the docters the other day and asked if he could give me something for wind.... he gave me a kite ! ( sorry again )

EDIT : Regarding my first post , ( i am being serious now ) i have just read a headline that states : FLU : BRITAIN ORDERS 32M PROTECTIVE FACE MASKS , death toll hits 152 and 40% are at risk here , health experts fear that as many as 4 in 10 people could catch swine flu if britain is hit by a pandemic.... IMO though , its still a big IF

WORLD Health Organisation experts stopped just short of declaring a formal swine flu pandemic last night despite news that a Mexican toddler had died in Texas and as Spain confirmed its first case in a person who had not visited Mexico.

Experts say virus likely to hit here

I don't know the details but surely the very young and the very old would be more susceptible to the virus anyway? I mean they give elderly people the winter flu bug mainly because the "normal" flu could kill an elderly person.

It is sad it's taken a young childs life, but the news it's claimed the life of a small child outside Mexico isn't my definition of a "pandemic"

Definitely scary stuff though, if it spreads and gets worse....

but the news it's claimed the life of a small child outside Mexico isn't my definition of a "pandemic"

I think it has been given pandemic status due to the rate at which it is spreading after first being discovered... Im not sure what to make of this whole swine flu business, i havnt really read into it

The damn World Health Organisation never kick up such a stink when hundreds of old people die every year of the regular flu

This current situation is sickening media hype.... All men are surely immune to this as we are capable of coping with the evil 'man flu'.... after a dose of that the swine flu is a mere sniff and sneeze  ;)

Its natures way of restoring the balance

I totally agree. Just because Pandemics were in the past- The flu of WW1 & the plague of the Middle Ages etc, doesn't mean that we are immune now when the world is a smaller place & the Powers that Be are playing with Biological weapons.

Oh yes, you can include Global Warming as a method of restoring the balance too, till proven otherwise.

According to some specialist on the news this morning, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to that of the flu. The most vulnerable are the very young and elderly but other than that the rest of us should be okay, providing that we're fit and healthy and all that.

To the almighty creator of this thread, if memory serves me correctly, medical, hygiene and dietary standards along with a load of other things aren't as good as they are today. Hence why a lot of people died. Nowadays you've got some pretty nifty medication, an array and easy access to healthy food and good doctors too. Undoubtedly, some will die because of this outbreak but I don't think it'll be in the thousands.

On another note, did the Mexicans name it after the Americans? Swine flu... Like the Cubans with "Bay of Pigs"?... Don't take me seriously... Only joking.

Being brutally frank, it is natures way of keeping a hugely over populated (for its infrastructure) undeveloped area a little closer to being in check.

Survival of the fittest and all that!
