Hi, i have owned a yaris before and a supra and me and my wife are a bit of toyota fans but here's a problem i have never had,

last night we got ready to go shopping, baby in car and the such, turned the ignition and the car turned and the engine started ---

to start for about 4 seconds then cut out, so i turned the ignition off and back on again but now the engine just turns and its not

even biting it just turns and turns, i have read a few comments in the forum check all fuses etc, but im stuck so hopefully someone

could give me a point in the right direction? It's a 2000 plate 1.0 GLS VVti. Here hoping its not gonna cost a load and is a quick

fix, its my wifes car and she's missing it already :)

Thanks

Hi,

have you got it started yet? If not then it's probably just flooded, this is a common fault when the engine is stopped soon after first start of the day. To get it started just turn the key while flooring the gas pedal untill it starts (could take approx 20 to 30 seconds) but keep the gas pedal down to the floor until it starts.

Hope this works for you.

The reason it cut out in the first place is a mystery.

Please post a reply if you get it started or not, thanks.

cheers for the reply, i was wondering if it was flooded, i had tried to turn the car for 20 or so seconds but to no avail

so i thorght i would give it one more go with the gas pedal down, and as if by magic! it started run really grumpy and

massive cloud of smoke out the back but it running fine now, appreciate your reply thanks and the wife says thanks

too :)

This happened to my old 1.3 SR...

Co-incidently, just before it happened, I was caught short on fuel so bit the bullet and filled up at ASDA...... After giving it a good running through and then topping up with Optimax, It did the trick.

If you havent done so, Change the Spark Plugs.

I know the service book says something like 40,000 miles but short journeys dont help.

I.e the wifes car.

Had one few weeks back spluttering when cold, new plugs, clean out the plug hole tube and thats it.

I had a similar problem a few months back, even got the AA out to sort it!! :censor:

Turned out it was just flooded and the plugs (when worn) get oily so no spark, hence no start!!

I would just change the plugs, then it's happy days again! :yahoo:

You might be wise getting your Battery checked too.

I had a similar issue a couple of times on my 2000 Yaris as the Battery came to the end of its life.

The fuel pump is electric and it needs to be running full voltage for the high pressure fuel injection to work properly.

If the Battery is starting to get weak, it might be struggling to provide full power to the fuel pump whilst the starter motor is running.

Exactly the same thing happened to me tonight, i'd just driven back from Glasgow and was planning on using my Yaris ('99 1.0 GLS) to visit a friend on the other side of town, and it just kept turning over until I tried starting it with the throttle down, then the same could of smoke appeared from the exhaust...weird considering its running perfectly now as always...
