Hi all just wondering if the 1999 avensis leanburn edtion could handle pulling a small caravan?

I am not sure of the pull strength of my car.

I am thinking of fitting a towbar to my own one.

what do you guys/gals think?

thanks

john

Is it 1.6 petrol. mmmm....not sure i think it should be ok if it was a diesel maybe or a 1.8 petrol. If its a small caravan it should be ok. Don't know how the car might handle on a hill!

Do you have the caravan at the moment. The only thing you can do is give it a go!

\Got a tow bar from towsure and fitted it to a 1998 1.8 GS estate.

I didn't bother with the grey (I think 12 pin) plug but if you are thinking of a new caravan you MIGHT need one. Fitted the black one instead.

Fitting the towbar was pretty simple really. Remove back bumper , cut it, bolt the towbar to the holes where the rear towing loops where etc. etc. Wiring wasn't too much like rocket science either.

As long as the electrics are not too complicated on your car this is not too difficult.

Just take your time and check, check , check.

Oh and one more thing, paint the towbar BEFORE you put it on . Then you don;t have to take it all off to paint it later. Doh! (But I was in a rush as I needed to pick a folding camper up from Cardiff).

In fact a folding camper tows a lot easier than a caravan.

Cheers,

Pete.

Hi! i'm sure you will be ok with a small caravan because when i visit my brother in Co Mayo a little further north from you the local farmers are towing 4 wheel Williams trailors with 2 fully grown cattle on board!!!

I know they are way over the legal towing limit but from what my brothers says they have been doing it for years. The old 1.6 Carina E/ Avensis seems to the favoured workhorse for country folk in the west of Ireland and that model seems not to suffer from the abuse so your one should be up to the job.

Your local caravan dealer should help you out with the towing weight spec if you don't have the car handbook.

Regards .... Pete.
