Adilmon kindly replied to a query of mine under someone else's topic. If Adilmon has correctly diagnosed the problem as piston slap then it sounds serious to me.

To recap....My 25000 mile two year old Aygo is tappety when the engine is cold but okay when warm.

I've tried to record the sounds on my digital camera clamped inside the engine compartment. It's probably only noticeable by myself 'cause I know what sounds normal for this car. But here's a try....

The clip counter counts down. The tappety ratttle starts at 1:24, 1:11 and 1:00.

The car is due for a service soon so I'll confront Toyota with it then. It would help my case if I could quote other peoples' similar experiences

Thanks.

I should have added that the tappety noise only appears under acceleration. On a steady throttle or overrun, the engine is normal.

does sound like piston slap TBH. aslo the fact that it goes when warm and only audiable for a brief part of the rpm range.

due to the forged pistons n the rolla i get piston slap but its far worse than yours and causes no real problems.

i would however get the dealer to check it out to confirm its nothing more serious

I've watched your video & think it's worth asking the garage to use the intelli-tester to check that all the fuel injectors are working properly & not leaking. My car sounded rough and tractor like and that was the cause.

It's worrying that the tappety noise doesn't go away with a warm engine, which makes me think there is also the slim possibility that the valve clearances are out or the balance shaft isn't doing it's job properly, but piston slap is still the most likely. In any case, the diagnostic tool the toyota garages use should hopefully pick it up.

Toyota obviously knew there would be SOME piston slap, else they wouldn't have coated the piston skirt with low friction material
