Thats a normal diesel rattle that appears when you are labouring the car, use higher revs/lower gear... can also happen with cheap diesel..

For the first 1,000 miles I tried to keep the revs under 2,000. In the non 180 diesel the turbo starts to spin up at around 2,000 revs (so in sixth at motorway speeds it can kick in when you put your foot down). If I want extra power for overtaking I have the revs above 2,500 but not much point in going over 4,000 (as the power falls off). Standard pootling around town about 1,500 revs, motorway cruising about 2,200.

With 10,000 miles on the clock the engine in my Verso has just started to loosen up, but the noise you describe is most noticeable when the engine is under load or in cold/damp conditions.

Before the Verso I had a Citroen C4 diesel (very quiet) , first couple of weeks in the Verso I thought I had bought a Transit Van. So yes mine does make the same noise.

had a friend of mine come round and listen to the noise . he is a mechanic for the post office and has been for years and he said its not a normal sound . ie it shouldnt be doing it

Well mine does it too, around 1200-1400 rpm, especially when cold,so if it isn't normal it's certainly common!

I just try to keep the revs between 1500rpm and 3000rpm, it's much better for the engine anyway not to labour it.

at normal driving i keep the revs roughly 1500 / 2500 . unless i put my foot down . and the noise starts from 15/1600 up to 2000 then stops

Yours seems to do it over a wider rev range than mine then.

Mine only really does it when pulling away from a standstill, or very slow corner, etc.

I had just brought mine recently and somehow this starts up with the same rattling noise when cold, slightly more vocal than most diesel engines I have owned. I used to work for Cosworth Tech as a storeman and had a car scheme with previous owners Audi, we used to get new cars every 9 months :yahoo:

Anyway have had new 130bhp Bora, 115bhp Golf, 140bhp Audi A3 diesels and have owned Citroen Picasso 2.0 diesel all much quieter when cold on start-up. As long as this rattling noise refines and improve when hotter it shouldn't be a problem, but if it doesn't improve even the slightest it might be worth getting it checked out.
