Last year I purchased/imported to Canada from Japan a Toyota Hilux Surf SSRx 2.4 ltr turbo diesel. On a short road trip the engine over heated and we found that the cylinder head had cracked, which was replaced with a 3.0 ltr. Ever since then it has difficulty starting but not so much when the engine is warm.

Usually, when starting I need to turn the ignition on and off several times to get the glow plugs warm enough (I assume) to get it to turn over. When it does turn over, a great big plume of grey smoke comes out the back until it setlles down and then runs fine. Its like this every time I start. Im told it may be the injectors were damged by the over-heating (I dont know why they werent repelced if that its likely the problem). Or are the glow-plugs to be replaced? It seems that I have to pump the fuel pedal a few times to get enough fuel in there to ignite but then (hence) all the smoke. Any thoughts?

Also, the vehicle has 93,000Km on it and at around 90,000km the timing belt light came on and stays on now but the belt was chaged when the work referred to above was done. Any ideas on how to get that to turn off. I understnad there is some computer chip/switch somewhere? Also, but less significantly I think, the emergency brake light comes on occassionally but the fluid is topped up so I dont know what is causing this either.

Thanks for evryone's help!

First of all a 3.0ltr head does not fit on a 2.4ltr so you must have had a 2.4 or 2.8ltr fitted, anyway your problems seem to indicate that either one or more of your glowplugs are duff, get some new ones and fit them, but make sure you get the wiring correct and check the G/P fuse.

T/belt light is switched off by removing the rubber bung in the dash next to the trip meter, get a paperclip or thing stick and push the little button in the dash.

Brake light could be either the switch on the handbrake or the brake vacuum pump on the alternator, the pumps do wear out.
