I'm looking to sell my private plate which was already on the car at the time of purchase. Can anyone advise me of what i need to do and how to go about it? Thanks

You will need to put it on retention. The DVLA will give your car a new number corresponding to the year it was registered and your cherished number will be held for 12 months on stand by. You will get a new tax disc displaying the new number, you will need new plates showing the new details and you will need to update your insurance details.

Your retained number can be put on another car doing the same above unless it’s a new car in that case you take your retention certificate to the dealer and they will use your own number on a new car and not any old Mickey Mouse number.

If you don’t put your cherished number on another vehicle within 12 months, there’s a small fee to hold it again for another 12 months.

I’ve had a personalised plate for 10 years and it goes from car to car

Thanks TVOR,

I've rang the DVLA and requested the for to put the plate on retention to be sent to me. The advisor at the dvla also said that the form is available for download on their website which is handy to know.

Have you heared of a company called reg transfers? I not quite sure of how they work but i'm awaiting a valuation on the plate. Do you know if this is a company that will buy the plate or will i need to sell myself on eBay etc?

Thanks

Once you have the retention certificate then you can change ownership of the registration number which will involve more form filling. A lot of firms will give you a valuation so shop around

Also I believe if you sell your private plate through reg transfer or similar sites, they just advertise it for you and you don't get any money until they have actually sold it, so make sure you check the small print etc.

TVOR has left nothing much more to say!

Transfer fee is about £80, retention fee about £25.

I had to remove and sell the sickening "M3" numberplate on my car when I bought it lol
