Buying Gen7 (2000 - 2002) Worried About Engine Oil Issue

Hi guys,

I'm buying a gen 7 only able to spend about 3500 so I'm limited to 2000 - 2002 reg ones. I'm extremely worried about the excessive oil consumption issue - the ones ive looked at have been from dealers and everything looks ok when I've looked at the engine/oil/dipstick. I am worried however that if I purchase one I'll have this issue later on to the point where im actually considering not buying it (which is a shame because it really is the most fun car I have ever driven :( ).

Did this problem affect all pre 03 models or was is just a 'bad batch'?

Thoughts or advice when purchasing much appreciated.

Thanks.

This problem only seems to affect the 140, so you could buy a 190 which only requires changing the Lift/Flange Bolts to the upgraded type. In your position however, I'd save a little more and buy a face lift 140. Apart from giving you peace of mind as regards the Engine, you'll gain larger front Brakes and a nicer Interior/rear Lights. You will probably have to do without the Premium Pack with your budget, but it's still a brilliant Car even without the Leather/Sunroof/Climate.

It doesn't seem to affect all pre face lift 140's, but as the problem is caused by a design fault as regards Oil ways getting blocked by carbon deposits, it could. By the Autumn you'll be able to pick up a face lift for £4K anyway :)

hi guys,

referring to this thread here if i buy a 2000 x reg celica which has a FULL service history (does it have to be done by toyota?) and it then develops the oil burning/knocking issue will they repair the engine as part of this 'secret warranty extension' thing ive read about on the forum?
