1.4 D4d Lost Power Down Low.

I own the Auris D4D and drove around 30000Km up to now.

The last 2-3 months it shows me the gear down light whenever going on steep hills at below 2500rpm on 5th gear when it didn't do it before...at the same hill.

I also noticed that the turbo kicks in at 2500rpm when it used to start at 1800rpm and kick fully at 2200.

Has anyone experienced something similar.

I don't know what causes this and the Toyota service said there was nothing with the car the first time although they said to take it in for a turbo "check-up".

Maybe check the air filter, it could be full of dust and bits that could be restricting power?

Have you noticed your fuel consumption getting worst too?

That issue sounds like a blocked EGR valve, i have had issues with them on a few cars, when under the throttle does it feel sluggish and then it burst into life further up the rev range? Other possible are dying injectors or as Oldsko01 says it could be as simple as a blocked air filter.

If you do lots of town driving i would go for the EGR valve first.

Try to use Wynn's Diesel Injector cleaner, or STP total diesel cleaner, with the fuel tank low, then load it with good diesel, and go out for a good ride, really step on it(from 3th, 4th, 5th gear till 4000rpm) for large km's(100 to 200kms), to burn the carbon inside the egr valve and chambers.

I use Wynn's diesel injector cleaner since 15000km's on mine, and with 54000km's all goes well here.

Warm up the car then try keeping the load of the car at around 3-3.5k for 5 or 10mins after doing some acceleration as described. Decrease the load back to normal for a while (1.5-1.8k) then take it back up to 3.5k for another 5 or 10mins. Motorway is good for that. Give it a good drive like that for more than 30mins on something like vpower diesel.

You need to let the car idle for around 1 minute before switching off.

I have had a smokey 2.2 for about a week and i am beginning to think that it is due to me doing pure town driving for 2 weeks. I am going to do what Oldskool suggests and see if the smoke goes away.

Not having the exhaust / temps high enough for driving over time can cause soot build up.

It would normally happen on a lot of short or low speed journeys, sometimes anything less than 20 miles.

Short town journeys can't be avoided but i have never understood the people that pootle along and change at 2k RPM. I take it up to 2.5k / 3k in normal driving with 70% throttle, so nice and quick keeping everything warm then i cruise at a steady speed just off or sometimes on boost. Good for MPG too :)

EGR blockage is common for cars used in town, i would head down to the dealer and ask them to inspect/clean or replace it. Giving the car a good thrashing helps to prevent it sticking, however if you only go on the highway once a week this issue could reoccur over time.

I have the same problem.

Had the problem from the day we got it.

We have had the car from new (2 miles on the clock)

Would that be a faulty EGR valve ?

I think it is important to realise that the shift up and down lights do vary depending on the load you put on the engine. So it will ask you to shift down going up steep hills to maintain the best efficiency.

Same if you accelerate harder it lights up later than if you feather the throttle.

That behavior is normal but the turbo not spooling up until 2,500k is a problem.

Experience from Toyota Dealer on the subject.

Took it to the dealer and was prepared to "fight" for it ... when the dealer called and said there is indeed a problem although the ECU doesn't show it. That was a relief, at least they know there is a problem.

They will change a few things and try to isolate the problem.

A month past and already took i 4 times...changed injectors, fuel pump,...nothing.

I insisted in changing the EGR but they said it's not needed since the ECU would show it...OK.

After changing half the engine and finding nothing they begun typical dealer behavior...and i thought they changed.

They acted like there is nothing with the car eventhough the same people said there is a problem with it.

After insisting on it they said they will email Toyota and call me to let me know what to do.

After 2 weeks no phone call.

I called them and they said to take it in the next day to do an ECU update.

Took it in...nothing...problem remains.

The head of the garage said it should be like this...it's a 1.4 D4D what would i expect...i told them that the car wasn't like this before and they insisted that i got used to the power and i wanted more...then i told them that my wife drives the car...and left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not a joke!!!

I'm thinking about emailing Toyota Japan about this.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Can anybody post a picture of the EGRs location on the manifold?

Can i clean it myself or it needs to be replaced?

See if there is a Diesel specialist on the island and get them to give you an opinion :thumbsup:

Try to do a dyno on that car, to see how the engine goes... than you can show to the dealer, that the engine is not good.

It seems that you have a problem with the turbo. Somethimes that ocours. I know a guy that had the same problem with a 1.4D4D, and was a turbo failure. They replaced theturbo and now it's all ok.

just use v power diesel and boot it in second and third every now and again, i do alot of town/sub urban driving with very little motorway driving and this seems to work for me. Remember, the 2.2 DCAT 180 engine was developed in conjunction with Shell v power diesel (go to the Shell website to see this) so try to stick to v power diesel

HI, I was sure I've read this in some place, but didn't remember where!!!

Well, my car had this precise issue 2 weeks ago.

When I started the car (engine was cold), I had no power.

After starting to get hot, the turbo started firing at 2500RPM.

After completly hot, working fine.

Toyota dealer thought it was the EGR; however after testing my car with the engine completly cold, EGR was working fine (If it does not work fine, it shouldn't open at low RPM, working fine it opens and then closed at medium/high RPM).

The problem was: the turbo!

Yes gentleman, the turbo. My car replaced a turbo last week. If you need any case study, use mine. Same problem, same troubleshoot. Plus, the case is known by Toyota, here in Portugal happened, althought is not very common.

So, if Toyota UK is running from their obligations, advertise them.

It seems like a serie of Garret NV5444 Turbos were malfactured and our Auris were affected.

However, after the change, the car is completly new. I always use good fuels, always use the engine by the book, so its not about my/our driving. Is a defect. And Toyota knows it.

Update to the problem...

I'm not 100% sure but i think in my case it's the fuel.

The same period they updated the software i used different brand fuel and the problem was gone...although i attributed this to the software. Yesterday i used the same as i've been using since i bought it and the problem reappeared before even i leave the gas station.

Although i have to confirm this by refilling with another brand fuel...stand by!!

Well...filled it up and problem remains.

What the *&%%$ i don't know what's wrong with this.

It honestly worked for 4-5 days and then when i filled it up that day it "blocked" again.

Is there a chance that there is a valve somewhere that is blocking and opening whenever?

The fact though is that it didn't do it again...i mean it worked once and that was it.

Maybe the power map is adjusted based on fuel quality

I had the supercharged t-sport before and if you didn't put 99ron fuel in it, the internal engine map reduced power.

Don't these diesels require low sulphur fuel, maybe some of the fuel you put in it wasn't the best so the engine map changed to protect the engine... just a wild guess.

Only way to get it back is re-set the ECU or re-flash it.

Only other thing is blocked EGR valve from soot. Maybe try some additives in the fuel or drive at 3k RPM for 5 or 10 minutes then give it some full rev blasts.

Can you post a link? All I can see is that vpower petrol was designed with Ferrari and everyone mention of V power diesel has Audi plastered over it, to do with the v10 and v12 tdi's they have
