Verso Problems!

I have had my Verso 2.2 SR for 12 months now. In that time I have had the following issues:

1.) Odometer/trip computer etc. replaced

2.) Wheel nuts replaced as the originals rusted.

3.) All four wheel hubs treated as they were rusting.

4.) Wheel alignment problems.

5.) Uneven fitting dash consoles.

6.) Various rattles and clunks of unknown origin, mainly from the dashboard.

7.) Gearbox leaking oil requiring seal replacements.

8.) New clutch.

9.) What next it's only been a year?!

One of the main reasons for purchasing this Toyota was because of their fabled quality, durability and reliability. Have I just had a Friday afternoon car or is this REALLY what Toyota is about? The car hasn't even clocked 10000 miles yet.

I think this will be my first and last Toyota.

On the plus side the staff at the local dealership have always been very helpful and courteous.

I have just had my engine blow up after 40000 miles and Toyota saying not there fault. I need to find new engine or an engine car specialist who will put one in as my local garage (Curries) say it will cost £7500 which is more than the car is worth (it's 5 years old). Any advice from anyone?

Why did your engine blow up?

Which engine do you have?

The 2 most sensible options are, find a lump from a written off car or get a reconditioned unit. The cost is likely to be closer to £1500-£2000, once the engine has been sourced it should be delivered to a local garage who can remove the old one and fit the new one.

before you look for alternative engine, have you found the main cause for engine failure? has the car been regularly serviced using toyota spec parts? in previous clubs i've joined most have managed to get a discounted deal from manufacturer through customer services as a gesture of goodwill especially if the car has been toyota main dealer serviced.

other alternative would be as suggested already, by sourcing a lump from an insurance write off mainly advertised on internet eBay etc.. also an option posssibly an engine rebuild?

What about buying a warranty from Warranty Direct and see if they will cover the engine. Check their t&c though.

That would be fraud but, as it's warranty direct, please do this. It will make up for all the legitimate problems I had that they weaseled their way out of paying.

Also many are built to order to prevent storage. I know someone who has a new Yaris and had to wait months for it. Built in April delivered in May, can’t get any newer!

What if tyres have no coloured bands? The Dunlop Sport 01 has no coloured bands, maybe the better the tyre the better the drive?

new models would undoubtedly be brand new due to initial production start-up but afterwards as it becomes the current model as orders become stable, production figures continue with the need for storage. unfortunately production lines still have to meet the quota provided by the manufacturer, this forms the agreement of the contract before production of the new model, hence people still in jobs in car plants long after the models were launched ;)

wouldn't advise to fix a problem by adding a new one, as stated this is fraud and riddled with consequences if found out.

Cant get more than 44 litres in the 55 litre tank, speedo over stated, does not drive like 134bhp, my seat tdi cupra would have crapped on it.

Have you ever run the tank dry? If not, and why would you, then how do you know it is not a 55 litre tank? Toyota allow a very large margin so that hopefully you never do run the tank until empty.

How does the weight of a Cupra compare to a Verso, what about the gear ratios and suspension setup? Could you get seven people with individual seat belts in the Cupra, could you get four people entering/exiting the Cupra simultaneously? The two cars are not designed for the same area of the market.

As mentioned earlier there are good and bad examples of every make/model of car in existence. When you become the owner of a bad example it becomes a real pain and very annoying. Every car I have owned has had some quirk or many quirks when it got to the stage that the quirks outweighed the driving pleasure then I just replaced the car. In some cases I had very helpful dealers which eases some of the grief and in others no help at all and was left to sort things myself, ce la vie.

I also think the Verso is built badly. Mine was a joke when I picked it up new, and one of the defects has never been fixed as it appears to be a design defect. The dealer lying to me about doing work they actually never did topped it off. All cars I have owned have had some faults, but they were not so over priced as the Verso, were not from a manufacturer that waffles on and on and on about their 'quality' (which they don't have, because my experience is that they are utter $hite), and the other manufactureres never treated me with contempt for actually having the cheek to complain about faults. In short, to me, Toyota equals arrogance, incompetence and rubbish, horrible to drive cars. I wouldn't ever have another, especially as the new Verso looks like the interior costs about 50p to make.

just reading on here is echoing my feelings, im in a 53 plate avensis having moved to a family wagon from my bmw coupe, biggest mistake ive made so far, back to german engineering for me as soon as funds allow and the finance is paid off,,

My 2008 Verso 2.2 SR has now done 9000miles in 7 months and it has not missed a beat, nothing squeeks rattles or growns.... my discs look perfect, I get well over 50ltrs in the tank my paintwork is still shiney with very few stone chips and I stuff it through a car wash so it doesn't get pampered, it pulls like a train, never does less than 40mpg, is big and comfy, really nice to drive and looks smart

I am well happy. I am sorry some of you have had issues, as stated above there are always Friday cars...

Personally the worst I have had have come from Germany, Merc and BMW... had a few Fords and they were OK but I have now had a string of Jap cars and all have been superb...

Each to their own I hope your problems get sorted...

Which bit of a car designed in France and built in Turkey with engines from the UK do you consider to be Japanese?

That said, I don't go along with the general reverence for German engineering either; those who still do might like to count the broken-down Volkswagens they see on their next long motorway trip.

I have to echo this post. Our 2.2D4D t-spirit '57 plate is fantastic at 12000 hard and dare say it thrashed miles.

Sorry to all you guys with probs, We just had all that with a Renault Grand Scenic and it is no fun.

Fingers crossed for the future for all of us!!! ;)

Have run a T180 from new on a 55 plate still only 68k miles, regularly Toyota dealer serviced and in the last 12 months it has become the worst car I have ever owned including an Escort made by welding 2 halves together in the middle. Endless problems with engine warning lights & TRC failure which took the dealer multiple visits to finally diagnose as needing a new catalytic converter. Limp home mode isn't much use with steep hills around.

Strange noises on full lock meant a new steering rack, new discs at the same time. Minor point but fuel gauge is a joke, half full to warning light in 30 miles!

Latest problem is gearbox, won't stay in 5th, 6th difficult to engage and 2nd makes a noise like a washing machine full of spanners, so looks like a new gearbox is next on the list.

Thank God it's on a lease with maintenance or I'd be thousands out of pocket. Lease expires in January & will be so happy to get rid of this pile of cr*p and buy a decent car - certainly not another Toyota.

New gearbox fitted - old one was leaking oil but into the bellhousing so no way of knowing!

Further problems I've had since my initial posting include

- Intercooler tube blew off turbo causing a HUGE loss in power and another trip to the dealer. (noise scared me half to death when ut happened too!)

- 2 sets of wheel nuts to replace the rusted ones.

- Reverse parking sensors stopped working.

- Wheel alignment completely out after new tyres.

I'm married to this thing for another year and then I relish the prospect of getting rid of it and buying a proper car.

Albeit some relatively minor there have been just too many problems, which is not acceptable on a new car.

Your permenently scarred by this and won`t change even if you wanted to, so the sooner you`ve got shot of it the better and move on.

But the whole manufacturers range cannot be condemned for your unfortunate experience with a rogue vehicle.

I just hope your more fortunate with your next car because its still the luck of the draw at the end of the day.

I'm not sure about people raving about the relative expense of the verso compared to other cars. Ours was £17k as opposed to £21k for a Ford S-Max. I liked the Ford, but not 4 grand more. That said, i share some of the comments about the car - it does feel as if its built to a price

And you think the S max doesn`t?

Admittedly Ford have pulled their socks up with quality but they`re certainly no better than new Toyotas.

I changed my verso recently and did have a look at the S Max!! At the time there were some very good deals on the ford and to be honest it was a really good car to drive better than the Verso if I am honest.But the car is a lot bigger than the Verso and I did not fancy dealing with Ford dealers for my servicing. One thing now is that the S Max now comes with a power-shift gearbox which is similar to the VW DSG and both are good auto boxes if anyone wants an automatic.

I have owned 2 Verso each one were very reliable ,I have had good service from my dealer,and received an exceptional part exchange price on trade in

Can't understand your point. I never made any mention of the quality of Fords. My post was directed at other people mentioning the comparitively higher cost of the verso compared to other small MPV's. The Ford, albeit a shade bigger, was more expensive again.

It read to me as though you considered the Verso a bit lacking in its quality to which I gave the comparison to the S max.

All kind of noises are to expect in any vehicle...

The thing about Toyota is that you get extraordinary support from your warranty for a long time more than other brands.

So... unless your Verso doesn't leave you and your familie stranded in a dark motorway a couple of hours waitinf for assistance, it's doing it's job of taking you safely from point A to point B.

You'll see that when you get 200.000 km in it, you'll be wanting nothing less than a new Toyota...

That's my Toyota experience!
