Oil Consumption

i have 2004 avensis 1.8 vvti with 52500 miles on the clock. i did a service on it 2 months ago i used Castrol magnetec 5w 30 oil. since then it has being burning oil about 1 litre per 600 miles i have being toping up with 0w 40 oil after about 3 top ups i rang my local toyota dealer who told me to come in so they could run a consumption test since they toped me up just under 1 litre, i have done 500 miles and the car has only burned a small amount. my question is would the garage have used a thicker oil or is it something to do with there own brand of oil that stops the problem has any one else experienced this or am i just going mad, i know they are knowing for burning oil but the man in toyota said most of the problems was sorted out by the 2004 engine

thanking you

hello DAVE

firstly - you must be sure what oil viscosity was added by Toyota.

Have you seen the can with the name plate? May be they have simply added the oil with more viscosity?

Cheers/Igor

no when they toped up they used a clear jug which i presume they filled from a barrel which i did not see, my concern is they are using a thicker viscosity oil so it hides the problem

yes, they have added firmer oil to the temperature of the piston.

as the result - the oil consumption become less.

cheers

Can't see why the dealers would put anything in that wasn't right for the vehicle, it's no skin off their nose to fit a new short motor if one is required, they get paid from Toyota to do it so they are not going to be out of pocket. Had mine done some time back, not a penny to pay.

I deemed they have just drained 5w30 and poured in 10w40 instead.
