I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed on thursday under genral anesthetic, and it still !Removed! hurts!!!

My Tongue is twice the size it should be, lips are all cut on the inside, and my gums are all hideously swolen.. I can't eat or talk and have had nothing but a cup of soop and a fruit smoothie since wednesday

Worst of all I can't even partake in my favorite medicine... Booze as it'll ***** thigns up even more! (I found scotch on the rocks a nice cure for when they were giving me jip when still in)

Aparently I look like Desperate Dan all Stubble and massive jaws :o

Worse still my sister is here with her noisy kids thumping about unstairs so I can't be grumpy in peace, and out 8 week old alsation thinks its fantastic as she can eat my toes and not get shouted at! (Althoiugh she is rather cute :) )

And they keep having BBQs.... :(

Anyone else had this?

*sulk*

I had the two lower ones removed and I can sympathise with the pain and discomfort but in a months time you will look back and think why didn't I do this before.

Although now this is probably a sentiment you will not agree with.

I can remember 2 of mine coming out  & under Local Anaesthetic :mad2:

The Dentist was pulling with all his strength on one side , I was holding my jaw on the other, coz it felt as though it was going to be pulled out of it's socket :(

I was working at the time & used to frequent a local restaurant for lunch,6 days per week. I was on excellent terms with them & they gave me a bowl of soup with 4 or 5 scoops of mash in the middle. Try it, it will keep body & soul together

In the meantime, you have my sympathy  Bin there, dun that & have the bloody T-shirt :P

Cheers folks....I'll try the Soup and Mash idea.. I have various types of canned soup and spagetti rings for when I am feeling more adventurous in a couple of days... Everyone seems to say once its better it's well worth it...

The dentist/surgeon also had to remove a chunk of jaw from each side as the bottom two were growing diagnally into other teeth... Still !Removed! hurts... infact it seems to be getting worse!!!

Still one way to lose weight....

Hi

Just wondering if your wisdoms were removed on the national health , i had all 4 removed under general anesthetic at the same time , and like yourself , i felt terrible when i came round .

It felt like i had gone ten rounds with mike tyson , and i looked like it too , and when the surgeon came round to see me , he explained that they had a bit of bother getting the bottom ones out , and some of the bone around the teeth had to be shaved in order to remove them .

At the time on the national health , they performed what was called an open socket , which means that the wound is left " open " and it takes longer for it to heal , plus there is also a danger of infection , because when you do start to eat its very difficult to stop food getting into the wound , and true to form my bottom sockets became infected , all in all i had a pretty rotten time with it all .

Now about one month after i had my wisdoms removed , my wife had to have hers removed as well , only she decided to go private , the difference is chalk and cheese , my wife had the teeth removed in the morning , and i returned to visit her early evening , she was sat up in bed with a menu on her lap , pondering what to order for her evening meal , i could'nt believe it , and to look at her you would'nt have known that she had , had anything done .

Shortly after i arrived the surgeon came in , and i told him that i was amazed at the fact that she was about to order a meal , and that there was no swelling , the surgeon gave me a breif description of the procedures involved , and also stated that after the teeth are removed the sockets are then stiched closed , in order to stop the risk of infection and to speed up the healing process , open sockets will heal from the bottom up and take longer to heal, where as closed sockets heal from the top down and heal a lot quicker.

Anyway whichever you have had done i wish you a speedy recovery charlie , things will get better and its worth it in the end , all the best

Balli that sounds exactly like my experience... NHS, (which I had to partially pay for? WTF?) and "open sockets" shaved bone the lot, although there was some stitch work... there are a few really long bits of stitching flapping about, and I'm pretty sure the surgeon has tried to sew a bit of gum to one of my cheeks... How long untill you were eating properly and back at work?

I just ate some soft boiled egg cut up in a cup which is the first thing I have eaten since Wednesday!

Anyway Steve I thought their presence made you wiser... not the removal!

What is supposed to be the purpose of Wisdom teeth, anyway? and why are they having to be removed nowadays ?

Before the advent of modern Dentristry people must have had them in place for all their lives  Or died, roaring, in agony :death:

No idea... probably some kind of pointless evolutionary throwback... like toes ;)

My lower ones were actually growing at 45 degrees into the two teeth infront of it.. aparently this is getting more common because due to evolution our jaws are getting smaller... leaving less room for freekish extra teeth.

That makes sense  As the world population explodes, the Neanderthal element of the gene pool becomes more diluted & jaws become smaller , while we are still programmed for the same number of teerh

It takes many weeks before your gums heal, sometimes months down the track you can still find teeth fragments in your mouth.

Sounds like you and i had the same surgeon  as my gums were also stiched to the side of my cheeks , the back of my neck felt like someone had been standing on it and my lips were also cut , the open sockets kept bleeding for ages after , and i looked like the godfather with all the cotton wool in my mouth, the surgeon kept saying " strong bones " and that he'd never come across anyone with such strong bone tissue , he may well have a point in that , because i have never suffered a brocken bone anywhere in my body despite some pretty hefty falls and accidents in my time .

However if i can remember rightly i was back at work within a few days , i could,nt eat properly for around a month , mainly because of the infection , and all in all it took around 2 months to recover completely , i'm not sure thats what you want to hear , but each case is different ( i hope :lol:)

PS

I forgot to mention the importance of regular salt baths , rince your mouth around the area of the wound at least 4 times a day and certainly after every meal , had i done this myself at the time the chances of infection could have been eliminated , plus it speeds up the healing process ten-fold .

I did worry a little when he "did his rounds" in the morning.. when talking to me he managed to drop two bits of paper and knock a pillow off the bed
