Hi everyone, i have a y reg toyota avensis and i love it, recently i have been experiencing a few problems with it, my dad jacked it up to change the oil for me and dented he sump, he sorted that out by hitting out the dent. (i think). however the oil pressure light has been coming on and off, there was a little bit too much oil in in which he drained out and though we had solve the problem, i drove it to work without it coming on, and when drove home it came on, i stopped the car, re started it and it had gone out. continued home with no further poblems. next morning i got in again, light came on and stayed on so stopped car and re started but it renmained on, i drove it a little futher and the car lost power and stopped (NO NASTY BANGING OR CRASHING) it then refused to start and i ended up being towed home. i then had the inspirational thought of calling the rac... after all what do i pay for! who came out put jump leads on it and started it... the oil light was still on!! argh. i switched the car off again, tried re start and it fired. still none the wiser! have had the starrter checked prior to calling rac and it ok Battery only 6 months old so at total loss. any suggestionss to what the problem might be??? this dull blonde is getting incredibly cheesed off !!!

There's a few reasons the oil pressure light might come on. It could be low oil pressure, The oil pressure switch could be faulty or damaged, or it could be some other electrical fault.

Years ago I had a Rover with an oil light which came on intermittently. The problem turned out to be a blocked oil intake pipe in the sump. That one cost me a full engine re-build :(

You say that your sump was dented - if it's a similar set-up as the Rover then perhaps the dent (or it's associated repair) coincides with the oil pick up point and therefore the engine can't get enough oil.

ithink i have now figured out how to post a reply! ... there is no hope for the car is there!! lol ok it would turn over but not fire.... but atfer the trusty RAC turned up with 2 sets of jump leads its away.

initially the oil light is not on, but then after 30 seconds it comes off and does not go off....

before it stopped on me the car was losing power and the light was on, and it just stopped and would turn over and wouldnot fire. it was as if it had a flat batttery! grrr i really not mechanical thank goodness for dads and this site!!!

Have you actually checked to see if there is any oil pressure? If the sump damage has caused problems with the oil pump pick up (such as cracked the pick-up pipe) it may not have any oil pressure and it may be starting to sieze on the crankshaft, hence the flat Battery type symptoms (too tight for the starter to turn).

Don't use it until you get to the bottom of the problem, I suggest you remove the oil pressure switch and fit a pressure gauge in it's place to test the oil pressure first off.

Seems something of a coincidence after the dented sump. What did he do? jack up on the sump? :bangin:
