Avensis Could Not Be Started

hi

ive owned my avensis for four years , (48500 milage) last year took it for service to toyota dealer , result ; informed all four disc worn and needed to be replaced cost of service and reapair 738 pounds ,mind you did get a free valet.

last sunday car would not start , engine was turning vigorously with key but would not fire up.

called in breakdown service the guy could not start the engine either , told me no fuel getting to the pump , then towed to toyota garage.

the garage said the diagnostics pointed to the stater motor and it would need to be replaced at a cost of 598 pounds, i queried this and asked why if the starter was turning the engine how come the fuel was affected, his reply was its the solenoid that is activated by the stater motor that is the problem

my question why not just change the faulty solenoid. i`m no mechanic but i am confused .

getting sort of frightened to use authorised toyota dealer, seems repair is out of the question just replace the most expensive component you can get away with.

bitter ...... sure am :

Try a different garage, £600 for a starter is a bit step, you can get reconditioned ones from around £100

the end of the day, just take it to an other garage also it sounds like the fuel pump is dodgy not the starter?

hello montytin

there're no links between starter and fuel injection pump.

However both starter and pump have two diferent solenoids whose meaning is as follows:

- starter's solenoid ---- switches ON the main contacts of the power motor that rotates the crankshaft;

- pump's solenoid/s ---- allows diesel to be custed into the pump.

I deem Toyota's mechanic just told you about solenoid that is installed on the pump but not on the starter.

I'd agree with them just in case they thought about the pump's one. This pump's solenoid is NORMALLY CLOSED type -- means at no power this valve is closed -- means this one has to be always fed with electricity --- means its wire coil gets warmed ---- means more affected to be burnt out.

As to the starter's one ---- it works just at engine starting and after it's switched off.

Just check with my point of view and revert.

Good luck

Igor
