i recently had my timing belt slip and cause the engine to lock up. i was able to remove the valve cover and inspect it, and set the cam pulley at "top-dead-center," however the notch in the crankshaft pulley is not in the right position, it is off of the mark by about 20 degrees. ALSO, i am able to turn the crankshaft with a breaker bar, but there is only about 270 degrees that i am able to turn it before it locks and i can't turn it any further (a 90 degree gap between the points where it stops). i was going to remove the lower timing belt cover and remove the timing belt and see if i can turn the crank shaft 360 degrees, or if it still locks up in those two places. i am unable to remove this lower cover without taking the crankshaft pulley off, and i am unable to do this. any tips or tricks for me?

thanks in advance.

Hi,

First off, the 5E engine you've got is a non interference engine, so you shouldn't have done any damage to the valves or pistons.

This might give you some pointers.

>> 5E-FE Engine Manual <<.

From memory, the crankshaft pulley will have a bolt running through the centre of it. This is usually the sticking point with removal. If you can get this off then the pulley should pull off with a puller. On the whole though, they are a good engine to work on - very straightforward and not overly reliant on electronics. ( they even look like engines - not lumps of plastic ! )

Good luck

Thanks for the tip and the link to the guide :)... Too bad i JUST got this reply though, i got my hands on an impact wrench and was able to take the pulley off.

I plan on removing the head on thursday (my next day off of work), and seeing what i can determine and/or fix from there. I really hope I'm able to get it running without having to drop a new engine into it.... I really like that car
