Cars You Like Eventhough They Are Not Toyotas

Okay folks - im not looking to start off a world war or claim that Car X is better then Car Y

However - i was watching an old episode of deals on wheels last night - well part of it anyway - So this was a programme that was originally aired 8 or 9 years ago (or so) and they had a guy who was trying to sell a 2.8i Sierra Estate (with 4 wheel drive) Ghia. Anyway i really like the sound of that car - big 6 cylinder engine with 4 wheel drive all wrapped in a nice assuming Sierra Estate body. It all sounds like a package that could surprise some supposedly far superior cars (BMW 3 series of the same age with 4 cylinder engines start looking a bit silly for a start - unless they are M3s of course) .

Id be tempted to have one (if Irish road tax rates for 2.8s weren't so silly - 1,000 euros plus :censor: ).

So what cars would you like that are not Toyotas (you can mention Lexus if you like - if it makes life easier) - however theres just one restriction - they must be cars a normal person could relistically afford

Take care

In the current lineup there are not many Toyotas that I *do* like.

I'm currently looking at the following, for a big quick car.

BA XR6, BA XR8, HSV W427 & VXR8 Bathurst S

That and a gen4 Hilux Surf (would have to be kitted as per the explorer Hilux)

Just to add a few more cars that i do like but aren't Toyotas (bit daft replying to my own tread i know).

Nissan Bluebirds - okay i know i know - a lot of people don't like them and no my reasoning has nothing to do with logic - i just like them. Way back in the day i was into Nissans (back in the day being in the mid 80s and early 90s when i was growing up) and always liked the look of them. Very reliable cars though - and a nice one really stands out now especially in black.

Back to logic now - Granada Scorpio Cosworths - power and luxury in a nice understated package.

E34 525s either diesel or petrol - for those not into their beemers - the E34s were the model of 5 series BMW that were being sold new from 1988 to early 1996 - lovely looking cars.

MK 1 and MK 2 VW Jetta 1.6 and 1.8 petrols - simply because every single last Jetta here in Ireland was either a 1.3 petrol or a 1.6 diesel - very pleasent to think of something different.

Opel Ascona with front wheel drive/Mk 2 Cavalier

Very nice cars with the right spec - id love to meet the person in Opel Ireland who thought it was a good idea to have the paddy spec versions for Ireland (very basic inside) instead of the much nicer UK spec ones (im thinking interior trim and stuff here - probably very little difference in terms of overall extras fitted to the cars (apart from sunroofs and things).

Peugeot 405 turbodiesels - i like diesels (don't ask why - i don't do logic) i like smooth riding cars and i like 80s and 90s cars - and back then Peugeot made the best diesels (from a driving point of view - couldnt beat the old Carinas and Corolla diesels pre D4D for overall reliability) - and i always liked the 405 styling - probably the car on my list that actually makes the most sense

I also really like the Z4 M Coupe, and am considering trading my M3 in for one. But only if the build quality is considerably better.

Even though the front "Is a little odd looking" I like the idea that its a proper sports coupe made for being driven, not a b@rstardised mid sized executive saloon that been kitted out with motorsport bits that the M3 is. Its also nowhere near as common as the M3, and I think less likely to fall to chav status when it gets a little older.

It also doesn't have the hairdresser apeal of the open top one (sorry Ian ;))

My choice is as follows....

LotusCortinaMK1.jpg

Because my first ever car was a Ford Cortina MK1 and I always wanted a Lotus version

Series1E-type.jpg

A series 1 E-type.... I could have bought one, but didn't, over 25 years ago before they became too expensive.... silly me!

Bristol411.jpg

A Bristol 411.... I drove one a few years back and heck that V8 is quick

1959_Ford_Thunderbird_Convertible.jpg

Just because I love big old American cars and to have one would be totally daft

Rolls_Royce_58_Silver_Cloud_1_Silve.jpg

Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.... I have driven a few of these and they are so nice and so attractive

Silver cloud is one of the finest Rolls Royces built ;) Shame the one in the pic has those stuck on wing mirrors ;)

Not the nicest thing to drive though

I was going to put De-lorean but I didn't think it fitted in with "they must be cars a normal person could relistically afford" As they are not that cheap anymore, and not really only car material either.

It wasn't mentioned because I wasn't going to put it down as its way out ;) I thought a Decent de-lorean was 20k+ plus constant fixing, which as a second car I thought a little pricey for most... I guess the same goes for the roller and jag.

If we are talking altime fave classics I have to mentions the 50s SL Gullwing... the "first" supercar ;)
