Steering Wheel Wobble At About 30.

A couple of weeks ago I took my 2.5yr old T180 into Mr t because the steering wheel wobbles, by about 5mm at around 30mph, as you go faster it disappears.

They test drove it and had the wheels off (apparently they checked the balance) and could find nothing wrong exepct the brakes were 80pc worn and the discs had a significant lip on them. They suggested a replacement of the front discs and pads.

Thanks to Kingo I got a good deal on the replacements and changed them myself, though it's made no difference to the wobble.

Interestingly the right pads had worn to almost nothing, yet the left had about 4mm left which suggests it's not breaking evenly as well. Me thinks these are connected.

My question is what could possible be wrong and what should I insist the check when I take it back, bearing in mind it's due out of warrenty in November. :unsure:

Cheers

Possibly a tyre out of shape slightly. Usually shows up at very low speeds, try driving at around 5 to 10 mph without holding the steering wheel. Just watch the steering wheel and see if it 'kicks' slightly each revolution of the road wheels. Goodyear tyres were very prone to this.

interesting. definatley appears about 30. guess a swap of rear and fronts will show it up. goodyears are on though.

doesnt explain uneven break wear though.

No, thats seems to be a seperate issue, probably due to a sticking pad or caliper or even a rougher disc surface. If the braking was significantly different from one side to the other, you would notice the car pulling left or right under braking.

Maybe your tracking needs done. My steering wheel wobbled around 70mph. Wheels were balanced so eventually got tracking done at large tyre dealership. Took less than 15 mins and only about £15.00. Problem seems to have gone. Wheel only out by a couple of mm!

The brake pads were 80% worn. How many miles car done. I think they changed my pads at around 60,000.

Turned out it was a tyre. Q.S. was correct, known issue with low profile tyres apparently??

4 new boots and 480 quid lighter. They were NCT-5's now got the excellence type as apprently they are supposed to be a replacement for the nct's. Not happy with them in the wet though, seem less sticky that the old nct's.

@Aamir2892

One of the pads was down to the metal after 28K but I does need to be breaked quite heavily!

@Lewisjohn

I might have it checked for the sake of 15Quid good idea.
