T180 Smart Entry System

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been discussed before but I am experiencing a very annoying problem of late. The keyless entry system on my rav is playing up quite a bit and it seems my wife's yaris is even worse, when you are at the vehicle it seems that neither car will unlock when you put your hand on the handle, like it is supposed to if you have the fob in your pocket.

You have to press the unlock button on the fob while waving it around trying to get the car(s) to unlock. even then it takes a few attempts.

Then when you are in the car it does not recognise I have the key in my pocket "key is not detected" error message.

I have to put the fob right next to the start button before I get ignition, these are all signs of a flat lithium Battery in the fob

I know, but I replaced both cars batteries and it's still happening.

One thing of note-the batteries were CR1632 and a very cheap brand, could this be the problem?

Should I have bought a better brand? The ones I got were the only ones I could get on the high street they seem very difficult to find.

Anybody experienced similar problems?

Cheap batteries will discharge very quickly. You will know this if you have ever used cheap AAs in a digital camera. Did you follow Anchorman's guide and remember not to touch both poles at the same time? This will discharge button cells no matter how much they cost.

Possible electrical interference from elsewhere, if it’s happening to two cars at one location then something could be blocking the signal. Does it happen if you are somewhere else?

Yes, I have experienced both cars doing the same in many locations.

I have a feeling as it has been pointed out to me that I have used "cheap" batteries and have touched both poles when inserting them.

Ordered sme energiser ones today any will be careful when inserting them, hope this resolves the matter or it is back to the dealer.

Hi,

the key fob for my T180 startyed doing this so I went to a nearby Toyota dealer who replaced the Battery for me at a cost of £8.12 which I thought was a bit expensive but it did the trick and if it hadn't I knew I could always take it back and blame them. Sometimes cheap isn't always cost effective.

My advice would be to have Toyota do one of the fobs and if this works then get the other done, if it doesn't then there is a fault on both cars or with both fobs which I think would be unlikely.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Regards

thanks for your advice, i'll see how I get on with the batteries I have ordered. I think the original ones were panasonic and you can get them for a couple of quid.

I must remember to handle them carefully when replacing though.

Cheers.
