88 Toyota Problem - Starts But Won't Idle?

1988 Toyota Pickup Standard - 22R

This situation involves 2 mistakes of my own to cause this problem. This is maybe good because those mistakes may point at the solution.

First, I ran my Battery dead leaving the headlights on overnight (oops1). I have another good Battery so I installed it.

Because I was not paying attention I crossed the plus and minus(oops2) . There was a big spark and some fuses blew out. (all the fuses that were on wires that came of the plus terminal like my stereo amplifier power cables have fuses in them.) One of the wires goes to the fuse box through a 80 amp fuse. This one blew also, so when I properly connected the Battery, nothing would happen at all. But after replacing that fuse the car starts fine.

When it is cold it will idle until it warm up and then will not keep an idle. I have to drive with the "3 footed technique". Also, when you hold the accelerator at about idle to keep it on, the engine runs rough. Even at higher rpms it is also a little rough. But it still runs fine in general.

So what is the cause? Do I have another fuse to fix? Did I unplug one of the tubes for the carberator when I was pulling all the battery wires around?

Thanks for the help!! :help:

Hi,

If you have a UK spec. 22R , it has a "N"-Type Carb. fitted to it - which is based on a down draft double barrel carb.

Provided the anti-run on solenoid on the carb. has power ( 12 volts)to it when the engine is running - it should idle.

They do suffer from perished / split vacuum pipes due to the age of the vehicle,so you need to check them all ( it's easier with the air filter housing off).

It sounds like you have an vacuum leak somewhere from the symptoms you describe.

If you have a conventional distributor with points, you want to check the points have not "welded" themselfs together due to the reverse polarity on the Battery.

Hope this helps
