Brake Pad Change

Hi. I am running a 53 plate 1.8 petrol avensis. I am going to change the pads and disc,s (scored), entirely. Does anyone know the torque settings for the brake calipers, when re-fitting ?. Or anything else that maybe usefull on this matter.

I know someone has done it to his corolla T-Sport. Said that it will apply to 90% of Toyota's as they will near enough be exactly the same steps. He did the carrier bolts to 107NM and the caliper bolts to 34NM. Same torque for back and front pads. Also copper or heat resistant grease on the back of the pads would do good as it stops the brakes squeaking.

Started to do the job today.I began with the rear wheels, everything went fine. Then i did the o/s front. One of the caliper bolts was solid. Soaked it with penetrating oil, and managed to undo it eventually. The rest was straight-forward. Right, now for the n/s front. Loosed the four normal wheel bolts, then when i removed the cover cap for the locking wheel bolt, found it was totally trashed !. I could not get the special socket on it , as it has sheared off half way down the socket. It is tight and doing its job, but i cannot undo it !!. I have been trying for a couple of hours, with no avail. Anyone have any idea,s, on how to get this pig of a bolt out ?.

Theirs are cover on your locking nut ain't seen many Avensis with that. If the locking bolt is F****D then you have a very very big problem. I don't have a clue how to get that off. Maybe you could weld something on to it. I don't know??? Might have to ask Toyota. You ll have to get a new bolt then as well or i think you might have to get a new set if that's what Toyota do. I know they can make you a new key don't know about the bolts.

Went back to the problem today. A mate said try smacking on a undersized socket, you may be lucky that it will just bite in enough to turn the damn thing. Tried it, and i thought it was working. However there is a metal collar around the bolt. This was what was turning. So back to the drawing board. Broke off the collar, tried again, no bite !.Stay focused, do not get angry. As the car was driveable i decided to try the local tyre dealers in a kind of stealth mode. The first one was Hi-Qi, i mentioned i needed 2 tyres on the front (a white lie !), hoping they would sort the problem, for a sale. They came back, saying that it would cost £100, just to release that wheel after their inspection. No chance of that so i left.The next one i tried was ATS. After their inspection, they said it was a dealer job to remove the bolt, which would cost about £60. At this time i remembered i was a AA member. Hmmm, i wonder. Phoned them, but was told they would just tow me to the nearest dealer to do what ATS had said, as they did not have the tools required for the job. Okay time is ticking. Remember, i have 3 wheels sorted, and just for 1 pigging bolt, the set. I then went to Kwik-Fit. This time i asked for a quote on 2 tyres, but i then told them about the problem with the S*****D bolt, and that i would only have the tyres fitted, if they could remove this offending bolt first, although it was not on a tyre that needed changing. The fitter said bring it in, i will have a look. Came back and said no problem, give me 2 mins. In even less time than 2 mins, that infuriating bolt was in my hands. Extracted totally, without damage to the alloy. I proceeded to buy the 2 tyres i needed at a good price (£140 fully fitted), then came home, removed the last wheel and finally addressed the last disc and pad change!!!. I am a happy bunny !!. Job done.

Glad it got sorted in the end ....3 cheers for Quickfit! You can't get better than a Quickfit Fitter! Well if you have seen their latest Advert on telly the customer asks them "what else do you do" must be right then LOL.

glad you got the problem sorted, did you find out how they removed the bolt

Yes. He showed me the tool he used. It was a long cylinder shaped tube, that he could put different end pieces on. The end piece he used, had like a spiral thread running through it inside. Which ran in reverse to the wheel bolt thread. When it was hammered on, the shape and direction of the spiral thread goes the opposite way to the wheel bolt, and removes the bolt. Kind of like an impact driver i suppose. I felt sorry for his mate who was holding the tool on, while he belted it on with a big hammer !!, but he did not miss, and it is all sorted now. Case closed.
