1.8 T4 Buring Oil Question

Hello There,

I have a 03 plate Avensis 1.8 T4 with 77k on the clock (one of the first new shape ones).

The other day I had the engine management light come on (and stay on) and after taking it to the dealer today they have told me that this was caused by the cataylic registering a fault.

They also told me that the engine had virtually no oil left in it (I had topped it up from nearly empty three weeks ago (which supprised me with how much oil I needed to add)) and that the car was burning oil.

I have been asked to run the car for 1000 miles and keep an eye on the dip stick and when it reaches the bottom take the car in for an oil use test (I think this will happen well before the 1000 miles is reached).

This is concering me as I do think that this should not be happening with 77k.

Does anyone know how much oil it has used in three weeks - from top of the dipstick to off the bottom?

Has anyone experienced this and if so what was the underlying problem?

I am thinking that this is going to be expensive to fix - already been told I may need a new cataylic due to the damage caused.

Any ideas?

hello mate

1. cat convertor is dead and must be changed (as to mine - I have changed it on 75k kms);

2. oil burning -- as per MrT extended warranty -- it is better to claim this engine to them in order to substitute a short motor;

3. Oil cons depends on rpm of the engine -- the more rpm the mor oil consumption

as to me -- i check with oil each end of working week, let say on Sunday.

cheers/Igor

Thanks for the reply.

1) It will have to wait

2) Whats the extended warranty you mention?

3) Fair enough - although I never over rev the car.

1. the icon will remain ON unless you change cat , as well as me;

2. 7 years (instead of 3 as before) - but youo have to prove good service history;

3. i keep rpm 2000-3000 and it is cheapper than to overhaul the engine etc

Thanks again for the reply.

1) if the cat has been damaged as a result of the oil burning issue then would this not be replaced FOC?

2) Well i'm within the 7 year period and have a full service history - all stamped by two Toyota dealers.

What does this 7 year warranty cover?

Regards

Steve

ok Steve

1. it is very good question --- but MrT has a chance to play and spiculate in order not to cover it, because the life time of the cat is 78-80k kms stasistically and oil burning starting process starts by this period :)---- any suggestions? I deem your main problem is to substitute the engine -- it is of importance.

The cat is normal consumable that is understood out of question.

2. this covers any problem with the engine. In case yours is still belong to 7 years -- then R U N there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to catch a short motor stocked :)

good luck

Igor

Hi Igor

Are you saying that as the engine is not yet 7 years old and that I have a full service history then I can have a new engine fitted under the warranty?

Hi Igor

Are you saying that as the engine is not yet 7 years old and that I have a full service history then I can have a new engine fitted under the warranty?

Hi there,

The answer to your question is YES, as I have had a similar problem recently. My car had a full service carried out by my local garage in mid March however last Sunday as I was travelling to work the low oil lamp came on momentarily as I was going round a corner. The next day I checked the oil and the dip stick was showing 1-2 mm of oil left. This meant the car had gone through nearly 5 litres of oil in 3 months. The good news is that on the Monday I had booked my car in at my nearest Toyota garage to have it's 60k service carried out. After checking the documentation I was advised my car did not need a service as everything that could be looked at had been carried out and replaced in March. Therefore I chose to mention the oil problem and that 5 litres of oil had dissappeared in 3 months. After some investigation the service rep advised these Toyotas have an oil burning issue and because the car was less then 7 years old and I have a good service history the lower part of the engine will be replaced by Toyota free of charge.

After the work was completed I was told the parts and labour added upto 2k in total. I was advised this included replacement of the lower part of the engine including several parts within the engine itself. I can't remember each part individually as I'm not very knowledgeable on engines, but yes I would take it to you're local Toyota dealer and get it looked at as it could save you £££'s.

Regards
