I'm looking to improve the performance of my lovely Aygo+

After doing quite a lot of research I have decided I need some help picking the right products.

Now I've seen the exhaust I want to get:

Stainless Exhaust

This was influenced from:

My107

I know someone that can fit this for me so that's no problem.

The main issue is what else to do.

I was thinking of getting some 15" rims with tire ratio being: 195/45/15. According to the FAQ this wouldn't affect my speedo.

I'll have a look for rims when I've done all my engine mods. This will be one of the last things I do along with a body kit maybe.

The other thing was lowering it. I found:

Apex Springs

That isn't the cheapest just a quick reference.

The main thing I needed help with is the intake.

Should I get either:

Cold-air Intake

New panel filter

Full intake kit

The filter would be a K&N:

K&N Panel Filter

Kit would be:

57i Intake Kit

This is the one without ESP since I think mine doesn't have it.

I've read that these kits aren't that great since they breathe hot air into the engine.

So, a CAI would be the best thing right?

But I'm not sure where to get these. I know K&N do them but not sure if it fits an Aygo.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unless you spend big money you will not get a huge improvement in performance. Having said that the ideas you have in mind will make your Aygo more fun to drive, and add a little to the driving experience.

The Aygo engine is designed for economy, therefore the porting, cam duration etc is limited. Adding a cat back exhaust and an induction kit will release about 5bhp, but will make the car sound faster.

I have made an exhaust backbox which has added a nice growl. I have also made an induction kit for mine. This has made a difference, especially on long motorway hills where I don't seem to run out of breath like I used to.

The K&N induction kits are basically an airfilter fitted directly to the throttle body. The induction kit I, and many others have made features a longer piece of pipework to site the filter between the airbox and the Battery. This pipework lengthens the inlet tract( after the filter), which leads to an increase in torque further up the rev range where you need it on motorways etc.

The K&N kits are also expensive for what you get. A cold air intake kit is the ideal solution, although the air inlet temp on a scangauge shows that my induction kit runs cooler than the standard airbox. I think this is due to the larger surface area of the filter I am using. The problem with the cold feed kits like the CDA's or DIA's from BMC that they use on the C1 Cup cars, is the size of the units. Space in the engine bay is limited. I have tried various units, but I have ended up with clearance problems. I am currently moulding a replacement lid for the original airbox, which will turn it into a sealed cold air feed system. I feel this is the best solution, and should release some( maybe as much as 3 :D ) horsepower.

The wheels are the right sizes etc. These will make a big difference to the handling and stability. I have tried 15's, 16's, and 17's, and like my 15's the best. I do have some 14's to try when I can sort some tyres.

You seem to have the right idea's. Now get them sorted, and post some pictures up for us all to see.

Cheers

Tim

I'll upload pics and videos as it gets done don't you worry. :D

So the Cold-Air Intake, would making one be more efficient or could I fit:

http://www.knfilters.com/universal/apollo.htm

Would this replace the panel filter. So I would take the stock one off and simply bolt this on?

You could fit an apollo kit, and I am sure some people have. This replaces the existing airfilter and airbox lid. You would then need to connect the Apollo unit to the throttle body with some 63mm tubing( normally using some alloy pipe and a silicon bend).

The problem as I mentioned is finding somewhere suitable in the engine bay to fit the unit. Most people fit their airfilter or sealed unit either between the airbox and the Battery, or in the space between the engine and the drivers side headlamp.

What ever you chose will be a compromise. If you fit the unit on the drivers side, you will not be able to access the oil dipstick easily. If you fit the unit on the Battery side, you will run into problems with the routing of the cold air feed from the grill. Ideally you need to place the cold air feed in an area behind the grill or front panel, but not where it is in a direct current of air from the front of the car. The areas underneath the headlamps, but behind the front bumper are good large pockets of cold dense air.

I wish I knew half as much as you guys on here!! So basically in Lehmans terms... will buying and fitting a K&N filter do me any good at all? What WILL it actually do? ha!

If you buy and fit a K&N replacement filter for the standard airbox you will do 2 things. First you will give £35 of your money to whoever you buy it from. And second, you will have a nice red cotton air filter in your airbox. :D

The performance airfilters for the standard airbox are designed to flow slightly more air than a standard air filter, but their major advantage is that you can clean and reoil them instead of throwing them away. If you do lots of miles and can offset the cost against maybe 3 or 4 standard filters, then go for it. If not just put a new standard air filter in every 10,000 miles and spend the money on something else.

The standard airbox flows enough air to work upto a certain level of performance, as it was originally designed. But, just replacing the element with a K&N/ Pipercross/ Blitz etc, or even taking the element out, will not do much to increase performance.

This is just my opinion of course, and I am sure others that have fitted a filter will say different. It has been discussed many times. Try doing a search for some alternative answers.

Well theres that cleared up! Thanks :D !

Hey timcrasher

I noticed your profile pic is of a black alloy on a black (possibly carbon quartz) coloured car.

It this your alloys and if so, can you upload a picture showing your whole car with them on.

I have a carbon quartz coloured aygo and im thinking of putting black rims on it.

If yours if a carbon quartz aygo, id like to see if black rims suit the car.

Very much appreciated, thanks

Hi, William.

My car is an Aygo Black, with black Pro Race 1.2's. Here's a pic for you.

aygopic4.jpg

My carbon cold air feed airbox conversion should be ready by the weekend. I will post some pics up when it is complete.

Aww thats rather nice tim.

Could do with it being lowered but its cracking the now.

My cars the carbon quartz colour so i think itll suit having black rims.

Was thinking black with polished lip but my mate reckons my car would suit better with full black rims.

Theyre 15" rims yeah?

Also, was the rear mudflaps easy to fit seeing as the rear bumper is rather erm...small :P

And one final thing, ive noticed other pics of your car before and you have the TRD sunstrip across your windscreen.

Can you tell me where you got it from coz im wanting one too :)

Thanks alot

Yes the wheels are 15's. I have had some lowering springs in the garage for over a year. I couldn't get the top mount nuts of the front struts. The car is getting replaced in a couple of months, so I will put them on my new one.

The mudflaps were fitted by taking the wheels off. You can fit them without taking the wheels off, but it is a pain.

The sunstrip came from eBay. Do a search for TRD, and a few should come up. I have recently changed the silver decal for a red one, as the original one was peeling slightly. It matches the other red stuff on the car.

Thanks alot tim

Found a TRD sunstrip on eBay and the size of the whole strip is 1300mm x 150mm (6").

Will that fit on the aygo as the models stated doesnt include the aygo?

The closest model being stated is the Yaris or Starlet.

Just a thought......

When I was at an MOT station, I'm sure I recall that a car was being failed as

the windsceen wipers were wiping over the sunstrip.

I'm pretty sure that a 6" deep strip would be wiped over.

I'm not wanting to put you off, but you might want to check with

you local MOT station just in case?

Discussed here......

I may be totally wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct me.

Yes, but you will have to trim it.

Unklian, is right about the MOT failure thing. The wipers do wipe over a bit of the sunstrip. Some people have also been stopped by the Police, and either asked to remove it there and then, or told to take it off when they get home. I personally have never had a problem with it, and my car is changed before it is 3 yrs old. The choice to fit one is yours.
